Anyone have a bow you couldnt get the twang noise out?
« on: September 05, 2011, 06:16:00 PM »
I have a Bear A mag riser with #1 newer limbs making a 56 inch bow just used one of my extra strings from my 56 inch PCH.  I have adjusted brace height from 7.5 to 9.25 got it better but never gone.  I have tried beaverballs, wool poofs, widow spiders, stole the skirts from my bass fishing jigs and used those too still twang.
I even tried using 4 silencers at different spots and some twang noise!   :banghead:   Shoots great just can take a noisey bow hunting!  Could it be the string (black and red black widow string) should I try a different string.  It is 52# and I am shooting a 585 grain arrow.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I had a longbow once with the same problem. Changed the string and put new wool poof balls on it and it was quiet as a mouse. I would try a new string.

I had a loud twang from one of my bows, but in my case, it was just a case of the nock being way too tight on the serving. Opened up the nock. Goodby twang. I don't imagine you're going to get away that easy.

Are you shooting split or 3-under? Regardless of which method you use, try shooting the other way and see if that helps.  Your bow could be tillered for string grip that is different from the one you use. If that's the case, there are things you can do to minimize it.

Also, since it's a takedown, there could be noise coming from the limb attachment points. A piece of felt under the limb pads might help.

I am working on an orig. 1969 Super Mag that has a bit of a sound to it.  I cut a bunch of it out by padding the loops down past the groves.. Still have a bit to go.

Bow hush sold here on Trad Gang works well...

Shoot split, I tired that 3 under and it was worse.  It is tillered about a 1/8 strong to the lower limb.  I will try the felt in the takedown area tonight.  I will also loosen a few nocks even more to see if that is it.
Thanks
Andrew

I have a take down as well. in addition to what others suggested, i took pipe tape and wrappe the limb bolts which seem to buffer some of hte noise.
best of luck with it

Hey Andrew, why don't you join all of us over at Land O Lakes bowmen for the 3D shoot next Sunday (Sep. 11th).  there are a ton of guys who are a general wealth of knowledge and most of us are trad shooters.  If we all can't solve your problem, then you must not have a problem.

If you can be to my house by 8, I'll drive from there, we can go have some fun for the day.  I just have to be home by 4 for my son's football game.

We are even going to make a side trip sometime around noon out to 7 Lakes State Park where we are having our 2011 MLA Hunt Camp next month.  Just a quick drive around and thru the park just to let everyone and anyone who will be hunting with us get to see the area, and start planning the strategy.  We are going to have 1500 acres to explore and hopefully bring home some meat, from squirrels to deer, and everything inbetween.  Well except turkey.  There are no public licenses for this area this fall.

Mike
Sounds good, I should be able to do it.  PM your address.  Just need to verify no Sunday morning kids games, I think full day Saturday and no Sunday games this week which will be good!
Thanks,
Andrew

Although not very trad and wayyyyyy too expensive in my opinion twang sounds don't stand a  chance with the rubber string leaches. Give them a try.

Maybe try a dacron string instaead of the D97 BW string?  And try some Hush Puppy string silencers from Terry.

Success!!!  I got tired of messing with the black widow string and took a SBD (Silent but deadly) Pierre Lucas a good guy and sponsor here 6 strand string that I had for another recurve that was a little longer.  Anyhow I twisted it to get a 8 inch brace height where the twang was lower and this time nothing but the twhoosh of my feathers and thwap of my arrow in the target!!

A twang is normally from a "too high" brace height.. Drop it to down to 7 and work up from there

I have a longbow that if I use anything but the rubber spider type silencer's on it, it has noise. I tried yarn, beaver balls, and other fur and wool material and nothing made it go away but the rubber type.

Sorry bud the strings that come with Widows are garbage!! I see you have it quiet but you can add a bit of velcro in the string grooves and that will quiet it even moreor wrap the loops and down the string with bow hush! Shawn

Have had a few bows that drove me crazy with noise in hind sight probably because of that string.  You'd think for $1,000 they could include a better string!
