European skull mount question w/pics
« on: September 18, 2011, 01:43:00 PM »
I'm sure you guys will blast me for the breach of protocol No hunt pics and story.Waiting on a rainy day.

Anyway I shot this bull last week and boiled the skull out several times and it's clean in and out.I noticed that the nose pieces and lower eye sockkets boiled apart. What sort of glue should I use to reconnect them?

This is my first attempt at this so any input is greatly appreciated.

WOW!! I used super glue for my bear euro mount on the teeth that fell out, but you can't see where the glue is. Mabey someone can give you a better answer.
You better get out with the story, your gonna get lynched!
Great bull congrats

that happens when you cook them to long, id say super glue will work just fine,or maybe something that has a little more body to it. elmers?

Use Elmers to attach loose parts or teeth.Sometimes you may need to use some strips of tape to hold parts while glue is drying.Sometimes a rubber band can be used around the nasal area to keep those bones from spreading.

Elmers can be thinned with water and used as a satin sealer for the skull as well.Epoxies and many other glues will yellow,Elmers will not, plus it is cheap, available and easy to clean up.

I normally use Future floor finish and water, mixed 50/50 as a skull sealer and it is a great finish for antlers as well.It really brings out the color on antlers.Mixed right,it should give the antlers a mild sheen. If you get too much sheen on antlers, wipe them down with some Windex on a rag. Some leather workers recommend the same Future mixture as a leather finish after oiling sheaths, holsters etc..It's good stuff and smells nice too. Also non-yellowing.

For $85 dollars you can buy the beetles and maintain them fairly easy and save all the headaches. Looks pretty good for boiling though! Shawn

Gel super glue works good,  also this stuff called zap-a-gap it's a gel base also,  good for feeling gaps.

Nice bull, can't wait for the story

you never want to actually boil the skull, only simmer it.another option is maceration, just sticking it in a tub of water and lettn the bacteria clean it for ya,preferably heated water.you did a nice job, especially your first try.if ya wanted to take it even farther you could degrease and whiten it.you dont wanna ever use bleach for whitening though,it will break the bone down.i always use super glue on mine, but some other good choices too for gluing everything back.congradulations on the kill

Thanks guys I promise a story is forthcoming however there is a very good reason for my silence.I may have walked into a golden oppertunity.

I had some elmers kicking around and the seams are hardening as I type.I need to pick up some peroxide today and give the whitening thing a go.

So far it's only cost me a 1 bottle of propane and a little time.I actually got some chores done waiting on the simmering skull.

Cooch, normally you would whiten before gluing.Anything water based can soften Elmers. If you are soaking in peroxide,it will definitely soften your glue joints. Not a big deal, you can re-glue them.

If you just boiled it, You will want to degrease it to keep it from yellowing on ya. Then you can whiten it using peroxide. this way, the skull wont discolor in a year or two.
