Removing a broken screw in insert from a broadhead?
« on: September 20, 2011, 11:06:00 AM »
In advance of season I was stumping with broadheads Eclipse 4 blades and on one of them the insert broke right at the screw threads leaving the head inside the broadhead.  Should I go pulp fiction on it with a blow torch and pliers?   I thought I remembered ready somewhere heat messes up the temper of the broadhead?  I used insert glue not hot met.
Thanks
Andrew

Yes,you will need to heat it and pull out the insert.Ideally, clamp the front portion of the broadhead in a vice, heat and try to pull with the pliers.Twist and pull as soon as it is ready. You can douse it with water as soon as the insert is out.As long as the bare metal edges don't turn blue from the heat, the temper will be fine. The vice is good because it gives a solid grip so you can pull as soon as the glue weakens.Heat will separate any glue.Just try to get it done as quickly as possible. There will be glue residue left inside that you should clean out with a narrow knife blade, rifle bore brush or whatever, before gluing in a new adapter.

I have another question similar to this.  The threads went bad on two of my inserts that are inside my axis shafts, they were epoxied in. I can not seem to get them out, anyone have an idea of how to do this?  By the way I tried a heavy nail inside the shaft.

If the heat doesnt work, go to an automotive store and get an easy-out tool. You drill a small hole in the broken adapter and then put the easy-out in the drill and it will grab the insert and break it free.
