Can I still shoot this?
« on: September 30, 2011, 06:07:00 PM »
Not sure how it happened bow is new to me, and I have been shooting about 1.5 a day. I am pretty devastated. I have a line a local guy who might be able to fix it. I just want to hunt in a.m.

Happens sometimes.  Pretty easy to fix.  Top layer of the overlay can be shaved off and a new one glued on and shaped.  For that matter, the entire overlay can be taken off and a new one put on.  Probably not necessary in this case though.  Can probably be shot the way it is without ill effects.  Be sure to sand any rough edges so they don't cut into the string.

Thanks. I am going to give it a go. Tomorrow is my first day hunting with trad gear, I was pretty sick to my stomach when I saw this.

Looks decorative and not structural Do what Orion suggests.

5 minute JB Weld in the mean time to build up the missing part.  I would shoot it as is but sand the rough as suggested. The JB Weld is just insurance for string to stay put.

Put a thin layer on after mixing and let the rest set up a minute or so. Once it gets to stiffening up add the rest to build up and shape with a wet toothpick. If you dampen the JB Weld after it starts to set you can shape it with dampened fingertips too.

You guys are great. I feel much better now. Sanded the rough edges off. Seems like string will stay put. Thanks again.

Yep, sand the rough edges and seal with super glue.  Done deal, unless you want to repair it for cosmetic reasons.
