Finally had a sunny day today and cooler temps (not cool enough). After a week of serious rain here in the North East. I decided I needed to get out for a walk with the new bow and give it a work out. Headed out to an old haunt to see what I could find and do some shooting.

After being out for a bit, I see something trying to sneak off over a ledge to my left. Not sure what it was, but I though maybe a big coon. I ran to the edge of the drop off Just in time to see that it was a huge porcupine running away. He started dropping down through the rocky ledges below me. I tried to maneuver after him. I was moving way to quickly trying to keep up on this dangerous drop off. The hemlocks were thick, and made it more difficult to move with my 70" long bow. I finally stepped out on a rock precipice giving me a view about 30 feet below. The porcupine scrambled along through the spaces between boulders and down the ledges. I drew back and let one fly. The arrow drilled him through the top of the head and he rolled  down between two large rocks as he expired.
Our porcupine season runs from Sept 1st- March 31st. I figured I'll give this guy a try if I can ever finish skinning it. What a job. This was my second head shot on a moving target since the summer. I never knew a porcupine could move so fast.

I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

I loved your story and pictures.

Tell me about your bow please!

I bet you felt a little of "Robin Hood" and Howard running through you as you pulled off that shot. Woot! Woot!

I know I would have!

Congratulations!

Yes, sir, tell us about that good looking stick!  Resembles my new ShrewHill.

Porcupine is pretty good. The ones I've eaten had a definite "sprucy" taste, but it was good.

You know the quills were used for bead work. I forget but I think you soak them and they soften you dye um and weave them into your leather if I remember. I talked to an old lady once about it she had it and I asked about it but really don't remember much other then it was really pretty work.
Nice shooting though.

You might be the first Trad bow hunter in modern history to take a PA porcupine legally! Think about it, You might go down in Trad Gang HISTORY!

A relative and I use to hunt Maine every year. Back in 1997 we each shot a Porky. On our return home I had both skinned out, salted and on ice. My relative put his skin in a cooler and let the it decompose. Thinking that the skin would decompose and the quills would be all thats left. After 2 months he checked it and called me to come over and see the results. I couldn't beleive what I saw as he picked up the quills and crushed them in his hands and then blew them away just like straw. I picked up some quills and couldn't believe thats exactly what they felt like and were just like dead grass or straw totally deteriorated as I blew them from my hand. I thought it interesting that porky's and Beavers have a seemingly identical skull.

never seen one in the daylight! Just a couple "napping" on the side of the road   ;)

what kind of quiver is that?
