Craft Glue for inserts?
« on: October 02, 2011, 05:58:00 PM »
There was a prior thread about people using glue for inserts; I'll be using it for carbon.  Someone mentioned they use their wife's craft glue, glue gun kind.  I saw they sell a stick of it at 3R too.  I've been using Bohning glue which I can't heat up to remove inserts from broken shafts.  Like the idea of removing since using 100gn brass inserts and hate the idea of throwing out good parts.

Anyway my wife came home yesterday with a glue gun and glue sticks so curious if I can use it for my needs.
Thanks!

If the shaft is broken, why can't you use heat to remove the insert?

I have used glue from the hobby shop, with no problems.

Sorry I used Bohning fletch tight or whatever its called.  I believe you can't heat to remove inserts.  Reason I was going to glue or the craft glue gun stuff.

You can remove any glue by heating, including epoxies.I wouldn't trust "Craft" glue for a minute. It is always risky to use heat on carbon but for salvaging part from a broken shaft,go for it.Big Jim in the sponsor list has a hot melt glue that I hear is good.I personally use epoxies on inserts but you can't remove them without damaging the carbon.

I have used glue gun gluesticks for years with no problem on carbons and aluminum. These sticks come in different strengths and hardening times. Always use the strongest [they are rated on package] and it works good.Put glue on insert and put in arrow, if it stops before bottoming out gentle heat field tip and push against a block of wood.  Also removable with gentle heating. Heat the field point gently til you can remove it with multi-plyers.All the field compitition and hunting arrows have been so assembeled. Roy
Maybe it is time to shoot what I have on the rack

Use it,but it cools quickly so practice first. And a hair dryer on high can heat a shaft enough to get the glue soft(glue sticks)if you need to get it out.If you get carried away and start making frilly lacey things for your bow have the wife smack you.Unless your a closet case crafter.

It's all I use on my Gold Tips and I've never lost an insert because of glue failure.

I've been using it on my arrows for the past two years on both aluminum and carbon shafts.  I like it as it does not get brittle and you can remove inserts when you really need to without damaging anything.  It also does not heat up the shaft enough to damage the shaft.
