10-25-11 evening

Went to a new/old spot today. Took the climber in and did a quick scouting session. Found a tree with the wind right and hunted. Bad,bad set-up!!! Saw about 12 deer (2 small bucks)but they all came in behind me.  :knothead:    :banghead:
Good thing no big bucks were in the groups. I did learn what they were doing anyhow. Next time I'll be ready for em.

Went out to the blind kinda late today just about 1730 or so just had to get out to the woodline brought the climber as the wind was blowing in the wrong direction for the blind set up and around 1815-1830 one small doe came passing by. Will try again in the morning.

Went to a new spot this afternoon; initially saw a very nice 4x4 whitetail; the area is extremely thick and should be some fun, especially when the rut starts.

Watched a BIG 4x4 tear up a russian olive tree this morning, across the fence from where I am hunting. Also watched my arrow fly over the back of a turkey; maybe I will pick a spot next time.

Just back from a 3 day trip. Tons of does and a good number of young bucks, Big ones are eluding me and have not started any chasing that I can see.
One ole long faced, roman nosed doe got a ride in the truck. For now she is just hanging out.

i called in a little forkie that had a main beams that were nearly touching 8 inches above his head. He came within ten feet of me and then slowly walked a circle around me until he got down wind then busted for twenty yards and then just stopped.  He walked a bit farther and then bedded down.  Later a hawk that could have been a young black phase red tail or an off colored swainson, landed on a branch about 45 yards away. after about 10 minutes, it folded and went straight down with a thump and caught either a tree rat or a large vole and ate it. he flew up to a branch about twenty yards a cleaned his beak before leaving. Then a vole knocked over my second arrow that was leaning against my quiver. I thought I could hear something above me most of the evening. About 20 turkeys flew up to roosts about 10 after 6, but none gave me a shot and I could not approach them without spooking the flock. Next time I will be in a better position for them.

Hi folks. I'm new here but thought I'd share my Oct. 16 hunt.  I had walked into a small field bordering a gravel WMA road right after daylight. As I was standing in the open field edge listening and pondering on which way to still hunt, I saw a deer coming out of the trees. I was in the wide open so just froze. Turned out to be a spike. He stared me down for a few seconds then hopped back into the trees and stomped a bit before walking away. No spikes allowed there anyway. I gave him time to move on and eased into the woods a few yards. About 75 yards into the woods and standing next to a big tree looking around. Heard quite a commotion coming from behind me and peeked around the tree to see two does running towards me. They had either been jumped or were just in a hurry to get in cover after crossing the road. The lead doe was huge and coming directly at me. She slowed to a walk and saw me and froze about 5 steps away. The other doe was about 10 yards behind her. I figured I had to draw even though I knew that would probably cause them to bolt. Sure enough when I drew the lead doe took off fast but the second one hesitated for a moment, stepping one way then the other as if deciding which way to run. It wasn't a great angle but she was close and I had a good spot eyed. The shot was good. Entered a little high forward but angled down as she was quartering to me and coming slightly down hill. She ran across the draw and I could hear by her breathing it was a good lung hit. She piled up on the hillside within sight. Gotta love those recoveries. Even though she was the smaller of the two, she dressed out at 95 lbs. Good to have some meat in the freezer.

The wind is blowing a solid 50 mph this morning. I decided to stay home and catch up on honey-do's.   :(

A nice morning here, 35 degrees, overcast, and light wind until about 0930; now it is howling.
Watched a 4x4 tearing up some boxelders this morning. He was about 80 yards away. I did some rattling with no interest shown except by one little 3x3 who was curious. Turkeys are still around, too.

Beautiful 32 degree morning. Saw two squirrels and a skunk.  Bumped three or four deer walking in right at daylight, but no activity near my stand today. Might try again this evening, but the wind has picked up to around 20-25 mph.
