bummed out
« on: October 04, 2011, 09:17:00 PM »
Had a nice 4 pint walk by my tree stand and I took a quartering away shot and nailed it! Saw the deer run away with better than 1/2 of the arrow sticking out. Waited 1 hour and started tracking nice bright red blood  trail and several puddles after about 70 to 100 yards the trail stopped! Started circling and nothing! Didn't recover the arrow and that caused the blood to stop ran out of day light. Will get back at it in the morning to find the deer.

I hope so I just sick! its my wife's girl friends house. They bought 40 acres with an house on it. They don't hunt and said I can hunt it all by my self! What a gift they gave me! The buck never looked up never knew what hit it. I hunted for 30 years on state hunting lands. What a nice experence deer that aren't pressured. Then this I know its part of the game but I just sick.

That deer is very dead and lying in place waiting for you to find him in the morning. You have meat on the ground.  Take a sharp knife or two.

You did right waiting.  Been there before, usually turns out good with some daylight.  From a stand with half the arrow in quartering away, you probably hit close to the top of the rib cage where it gets thick, but it should be plenty, especially with the arrow still in doing damage.  A lot of the bleeding will be internal with a high shot and no exit.

If you hit a wall, use instinct, look for tracks, and do a grid search. Good luck and get some sleep.    :coffee:

LimBender is right. Because of the lack of penetration, I think you hit something hard and high on the deer. If you hit the deer high without an exit hole, there will be little if any blood after the last blood you have found. If the deer is dead, he probably would have bedded in some real thick stuff. Good luck, I hope you find him.

Happened to me a few weeks ago. I was at the point of giving up and went back for one last walk and found my deer. My guess is you jumped him from your description. Keep searching sounds like he will expire.

Keep at it. You'll find him.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

For overnight.

Still better than 70s and 80s. It was hot here opening day and temps played on the deer I shot. But all ended well.

Update?

Do your best to find him but thats all you can do is your best . Dont beat yourself up if you dont find it because we all lose one at some point and it does make you feel bad but if you did your best on the shot and your tracking thats all you can do .

Well no luck, looked for 5 hours today. Did circles from last blood noting. Its thick with a lot of under growth. Looked for birds gathering but nothing. Ran a long deer trails and little creek on both sides. Went through where they bed down kicked some baldies up. Re tracked from first blood and payed attention in case it jumped the trail, but nothing. This is the 3rd deer I've lost out of 30 over the years bow hunting and it just makes me sick. I did my best and that's all I can do.
