Need a tanning company to send my Coyote skins
« on: October 12, 2011, 04:41:00 AM »
Howdy-

Just checking to see if anyone could help with a commercial tanner for some skins I have.

The company I previously used is no longer in business.

I just dont have the time to do these myself.

Thanks!

Your taxidermist might be able to point you towards a local business, or maybe do it himself.

I use Moyle Mink and Tannery. They are quick, inexpensive, and do an excellent job.

That is who I would call for the closest most affordable option, pick a local taxidermist who has been around awhile and he will tell you where to go.

Dean, you can easily tan those skins your self and you'll be much happier.

I have used usafoxx many times and got great service every time you will save  money sending to them direct then going through a taxidermist as long as you can skin flesh and dry then before you ship.  Shoot all of those varmits.

Rocky Mountain Tannery - Rawlins, Wyo.  They have done several hides for me, including my grizzley.  I believe they only do "hair on" tanning for taxitermy mounts.

Good sites- Looking into them now.

As for tanning myself, I can do it.... Just had problems with animals trying to get into my shop and it does take some time. Winters here are quite wet, and that would be the time when I would have the time !

I would probably try and ship 10 at a time. The local Taxi guys are so overwhelmed they are grumpy!

Thanks for the links- any more?

As for "do it yourself" kits and materials, what do you all recc'd? It's been a while since I bought supplies.

Need them to be moslty safe for human contact- mad bomber hats and hand muffs and the like.

Thanks!

Runs up River,

I know on some of the taxidermy websites people get into really big pi@#in matches about different kinds of tan, but I have found that  Krowtann is by far the simplest and has worked great for me.
 http://krowtann.com/
Its idiot proof.  Basically Mixn a lot of salt, water and solution and put hides in the mix per instructions, then neutralize and wash.  have done Fishercat, Mink, coyote, fox, deer and beaver.  All with perfect results. I was frankly, shocked at how well it worked.  I Would never spend the money again getting a hide tanned unless I was wanting it sewn with a felt backing or the like.  You would want to make sure you follow up with a good tanning oil and "break" the flesh side if you are going to use for clothing.

I'm sure it was a matter of national security...they really have other things to worry about than shaking down a fur tannery. Pathetic.
