I was off on Monday(Columbus Day), so in the morning I headed to a 58 acre farm that is approx 22 miles from my house. I have 4 treestands and 2 ground blinds set up on this property. one of the blinds is in a wooded area near a field that we call The Upper Hay Field. This is the blind I planned to hunt from. This blind was put in place sometime back in August, so that by the time the season rolled around the deer would be somewhat use to it. Enroute to the farm, I stop at the local 7 Eleven and got a cup of coffee and a couple of donuts. I arrived at the farm later than usual due to the fact, I left home later. The owners are still asleep as I drive pass their house on my way to the upper hay field. The light is already breaking the sky, and I don't need my flash light to get to where I am going. I back my truck up into a growed up area of high grass, grab my gear and then walk the .3 miles to the blind. I get settled in the blind at approx 7:00AM. As I am sitting there sipping coffee, I listen to the sounds of the morning and also the sounds of vehicular traffic somewhere off in the distance. At 7:50AM I see movement off to the right of the blind. It is a nice Doe on her way in to feed. She comes in and stops broadside @ 16 yards and eyeing the blind as she do so. I am thinking of taking the shot, but I don't like the sapplings that is pretty close to her and don't want a deflection. So she begins moving to my left, turns and faces the blind and then began to feed. As she is feeding she keeps eyeing the blind. While I wait for her to turn broadside, I decide to do a practice draw with my bow, but when I went to do so, she became more alert and was really staring at the blind as if she could see what was going on inside, and I am saying to my self, surely she can't see me and i don't think I made any noise. So I immediately stop and am now thinking that she will try and get out of there. But she continues to feed and licking her lips. At 8:06 she must have had enough and began to turn to leave. Where she was standing there is some small trees and some sapplings, and I did not have much of a window to get my shot off before her back end would be facing me.
So as she began to turn to her right, which put her left side towards to me, I come to full draw, and as soon as she was broadside I let fly and see the arrow take her through the chest.
She tears out of there running through the woods and down over a hill. I lose sight of her and thought I heard her crash and go down.
I wait 5 minutes unzip the blind , grab my back pack and bow and go over to where she was standing. There is no blood, but man I can really see her scuff marks in the dirt as she ran out of there.
I go a few more yards and there is blood. I eventualy follow the blood trail down over the hill and there she is piled up, 75 yards from point of impact. It was a good morning to be out in the woods. So I am on my way to getting the freezers filled. (Equip used) 62" Dale Stahl Longbow/ 58# @ 31"/ 593Gr 5575 Goldtip Trads/ Black Diamond Delta 4 Blade Broadhead. Thanks for reading and looking.
