What should be my next bow?
« on: October 13, 2011, 07:56:00 PM »
Right now I have a Samick Sage recurve.  I think I would like to try a longbow.  I made my own longbow and it worked great for a while but then it cracked.  I want to just buy one for now til I get the hang of making them myself.

Price range is around $200, commercial, custom...does not matter to me.  Custom would be nice but either way I am happy.

I dont know a lot about different bows so I figured yall could recommend me a good step up from the Sage.

have a look at the classified. As for wich one, it is hard to say, I would say ike most people would say here try as many as you can an get the one that feel the best in your hand and to shoot for you!
good luck

Another fine option would be procuring a Montana from the classifieds. Have seen many go for $175-$200.

Have shot a couple of 1000 rounds thru them.
They are indeed a nice bow.

I know I was being a weisenheimer in the last post   :readit:   but I think if you saved up another 100 or 2, your options would be quadrupled in the classified section.

The nice thing is if you buy the bow at a fair price and take are of it, you should get close to if not exactly the same price for it if you dont like it. (minus the shipping)

I think you should shoot as many as you can, then decide what fits the best and you shoot the best!
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I guess I will probably sell my compound to get a nicer longbow. I am hesitant to do so because I am still new to trad archery and know so little about it. I wish I could shoot more before I bought one but I only have one archery shop near me and they only sell compounds.

I got a Don Dow for around $300.  He lets you pick your grip (I went with a med recurve style grip) and offers a near centershot, which let me use most any arrow I have.

Usually you get a chnace to shoot a lot of styles at events like 3D shoots and Rendevous.

There are a lot of guys freom GA, maybe you could hook up with a few. Plus there must be a traditional club down there.

Gig around in this area. YOu can find it at the bottom of the main forums page.

choosing a stick bow is a personal thing.  the more time you spend in the sport of traditional bowhunting, the more your shooting skills and tastes for gear will fluctuate - hopefully, all for the better.

there is no way anyone can tell you what you should do - what bow to buy or arrows to shoot or even how to shoot.  tackle is very subjective stuff.  ask opinions of others and that's what you'll get - other folks' opinions of what works for them and not necessarily you.  if at all possible, try before you buy - the classifieds are full of reasons to corroborate that statement, and a good reason to look their first.  all the other ground rules about selecting a stick bow apply - know what yer doing, understand what yer after.  good luck.

Looking for 50#.  I am shooting a 40# right now but its very light for me.  Everyone said go light for your first bow so I went with 40# to get my form down.  Now that I got my shot memorized I am looking to put some power behind it!

I am going to keep my eye out for a Montana...

Those bows look very nice but will I be able to draw 28" with one?
