String Silencer Material
« on: October 15, 2011, 07:37:00 PM »
Through the years I've tried all sorts of string silencers with varying amounts of success. Cat whiskers, beaver balls, wooly whiskers, etc.  By far my favorite and the one I'm still using is Military 550 cord or paracord.  Take a piece 2ft long or so and pull the guts out of it.  Then cut it up into pieces 2 or 2 1/2 inches long and thread them into your bow string. Four on top and four on bottom seems to be about right for me.  As you shoot the nylon unravels and make a very nice and effective silencer.  They also last forever. Give it a try.

Is there no end to the use of 550?

Good idea!

There was a great article in TBM some time ago , which I still have, where a fellow  (Frank) tested all the silencer materiaLs over a period of time with Oscillating / noise recording /decibel devices etc. The muskrat fur silenced better and did not affect arrow speed. They cost a dollar...well maybe a little more. They look Oh so good as well  :readit:

Was at the land fill this spring and someone was throwing away an old 10 speed bike.  I took the inter-tube and cut it in 1/8th to 1/4 inch rings.  I tied a few of these cut rings/strips onto my strings in two little groups.  They work great, are free and I have a many life time supply.

My wife gets upset when I call our three sheep my "living 3-D targets".

Jacob's are the only sheep with four horns (his are twice that size now and I had to take a saw to one that was curled into his jaw).  They make nice socks, too.     ;)
