Looking for some recurve ideas/suggestions
« on: October 16, 2011, 12:05:00 PM »
Well, I've been a longbow guy for about ten years now and just recently purchased my first recurve...it is a Saxon Selkirk.  I made this choice based on the grip being very similar to  what I have found to fit me best on my longbows.  I have found that even a medium grip on a one piece/or three piece is too high for me when I shoot in the low to mid 60# range.
Any suggestions on a one or three piece recurve with a low or even locator style grip?  I prefer a bow with good cast, but not a speed freak.  I would take smooth draw and dead in the hand quiet over 8 fps anyday!  Any suggestions...pics would be great as well.

Thanks in advance!

Travis

Travis,

Some time back, Fred Aspell wrote an article about shooting a recurve and a longbow, I believe it was in Traditional Bowhunter. Read it if you can find a copy, he confirms what you said and more.

Have to agree with Bjorn.....many of the custom bowyers will build a bow with a grip to meet your specs. I shot a low wrist Widow PSAIII @ Compton last summer and it shot very well. Timberhawk, Tall Tines and Stalker and I am sure many others will do the same! Good Luck with your "bow hunt"! Mike

My new Black Canyon sounds right up your alley but I don't think the bowyer is taking orders as of now. It is very smooooooth with no shock. Not too slow either.

Wow TJ I really like the looks of that bow.  Especially the grip, and the limbs appear fairly narrow.  Yep this is exactly what I was hoping to find by posting this.

Thanks TJ for the pics, and to everyone else that took the time to reply.

I would contact South Cox at Stalker Recurves.  (707)-768-1900
I just ordered a recurve from him today after test driving one of his Striker models. Excellent bows and a quick turn around at this time.

Try Lee Hoots.  He makes a great bow with a locator type grip.

It would help to know what grip or bows you like now.  Many boyers will build you something, but I like to get something I know firsthand will work for me.   Here are some I have shot and found to be great shooting and mostly quiet.

Whisper Stik is a nice bow and quiet for a recurve.  JD has a bulb type standard grip, but also a classic.  JD has a 3 pc. also with a lower grip.

BW's have a low grip I love, but not so quiet in a 3 pc except the PCH for me.  Maybe a PSR, but have not shot one in a long time.  I love the PL grip and I think it is the same on the PSR.  A PSR with a take down sleeve would be nice.

Love the looks of that Black Canyon, but have not shot one.

Morrison has a few I like with low grips like the ILF wood riser and the Cheyenne.

You could check out a Great Northern Ghost or Super Ghost.  The Super Ghost has a little more grip shape, and I think you can get the Ghost with a locator or even straight grip and a jack knife TD system if you like.

Talk to Kirk at Bigfoot Bows (Sponsor). Just finished an order with him and you not could ask for a person any more helpful. Good Luck
