4 pigs went to piggie heaven this weekend
« on: October 17, 2011, 12:35:00 PM »
Had some fun this weekend at the ranch. I was lucky enough to get into a mess of pigs....twice.

All went down smoothly except for the red one in the last pic. Poor shooting and pig tenacity almost let him get away.

I actually shot a 5th pig as well, but it was with a rubber blunt for practice....I'd already run out of broadheads. Go figure.

All shots were with a 45@29 Toelke Whip. 2 of the shots were with the black 2 blade Magnus heads and 2 were with 4 blade Magnus Stingers.

I have some "graphic" pics I can post if anyone is interested   :)

I'll also add that despite the drought, these pigs were in good condition. Plenty of fat on them.

Looks like you have been haveing some fun there.I think hogs are made to order for bow hunting. We have a big pit that we fill with a pick up load of firewood. We let it burn down to coals, then wrap quarters in tinfoil and place on top of the coals. Then i cover the pit with sheets of tin and shovel dirt over the tin.Takes about 6 to 8 hours to cook. The coals will be so hot you will think it would burn the meat up but it dont and it will stay real juicy and wont dry out.We do pigs, and deer both this way.You can put sliced up bell peppers and onions in with the meat too.Wild hogs can be a real problem here in the south. They can have several large litters a year so they multiply way faster than other big game. And they are like big vacum cleaners sucking up every acorn in the woods in short order so are big competitors for the deer.Once they get established in a area there is no getting rid of them.If the food supply gets short in one area they just follow the river to new food.God help any farmers with bean fields or corn.

Great work Jeff. Did you get a chance to walk around and gather some Mesquite and flavor some meat?

Nothing finer.

Talk about "bringing home the bacon!"  Great shooting!

Kituwa, that sounds similiar to how the Fijians cook in their "earth ovens".  Dig a pit, build a large fire, put big stones in the fire to get them red hot, then take all the firewood out, layer the stones in the bottom of the pit, put green wood on top of the stones, then wrap chicken, fish, root crops, etc., in baskets, lay them on top and bury it for 2 hours.  Mmmmm, it is so tasty it makes my tongue slap my brains out just thinking about it.
