Finicky winds

Is it just me or are the winds more variable when hunting on the ground? Set up for a SW wind this evening, and it was out of the NE just as much as the SW. How is it possible that the winds come from two totally different directions? It's like it blows one way, then gets sucked back the way it came from.

The wind's been crazy here the last few days also. It even blowed straight up Saturday!
It's tough hunting when it's like that for sure.

Any form of terrain, including trees and ground cover impact wind direction. Throw in light or moderate winds and the swirl game is on.

The Kettle Moraine area of eastern Wisconsin provides for hunting in mini-mountains. The wind is never the same as you stalk around or over these little hills.
I first realized this when setting up on a bedding area and thought I had a perfect wind. Not to be. Just a slight swirl and he was gone from only 12 yards and the shooting lane just one step away.
