glass arrowhead question
« on: October 20, 2011, 08:08:00 PM »
has anyone ever made and used or used a glass arrowhead on a hunting arrow instead of flint or such .
just wondering as i have a huge supply of glass bottles my buddie is cleaning out his grandmas basement and they are just like the older juice bottles an i wanted to try my hand at flintknapping  and just thought wonder if i made a head if it would be practical to use it or would it be better to make them pretty and hang them on the wall .

thanks for all answers in advance .

The question is would they be as strong on impact as flint or obsidian(spelling)?

I have no experience with them but I would think they would break rather easily.
Its not the size of the animal you hunt that matters. Its how you hunt the animal.

Osidian is a mineraloid ( read glass ) which has the same strength characteristics as glass from a bottle.  They will work fine for hunting.

I've been flint knapping with English flint and a bit of glass.  I can say that flint is definately stronger than the glass.  I don't know if that information helps or not.

I knap a lot of heads out of glass and have taken big game with them.  Obsidian too - which is the same thing.  A good source for glass is pet shops.  Look for the fancy glass rocks they sell for aquarium decorations.  It is slag glass and comes in cool colors - just try to steer away from any with a lot of air bubbles and you can make very servicable hunting heads from it.

Glass is stronger than obsidian, the pretty streaks in obsidian are different minerals that ruin the uniformity and density and make it brittle.  Glass will make a very servicable point.

It is actually more important to have a smooth transition and no corners where the point enters the shaft than what the point is made of.  Bill
