How's About An "Almost" Topic?...........
« on: October 21, 2011, 04:45:00 PM »
Think I may change my name to "Almost". Fits me best during deer season.....

Opening morning, distracted by a rabbit, buck walks up to me at ten yards- Busted!

Two minutes later, while cutting some thorn branches out of the way- Busted by the bucks girlfriend from behind me!

All this happened twenty yards from my house... Why do I bother going outside?

Next morning, didn't have time to get dressed. Bow, glove, arm guard, pj's and hat (that's all)... Out the door hiding behind my propane tanks- Busted Again! Should of slept on the front porch.

Third day, action again... Did it all right. Wind, terrain, slower that slow, cover, attack from the blind side! There they were. Right there... Didn't see the one that saw me! Busted Again! Gotta love this stuff, or else why keep tryin'?

I used to have a bad habit of eating sunflower seeds in my stand while hunting when i was younger, out walks a nice 9 point and i stand to get in position for a shot when i left the sunflower seeds in my lap. I almost got a shot!

Three separate does with fawns and two more in shooting range and wind swirls.  Awesome hunts just no deer to show for it. Keep at it you will connect

I shaved ones back after readjusting my hat with my bow string this morning. Always feels like the last deer you will ever see. Deer season is always a roller coaster ride.  :D

This stalking and/or still hunting is tough but it makes me tick! No tree stands, store bought blinds, game calls or trail cameras for me... Maybe that's why I ain't got a deer since I've been hunting with trad gear... I'll get back up there in a couple weeks and try again.

Seeing them is half the battle. Every instance is part of the learning curve.  Keep at 'em, sounds like you are getting closer all the time.
Good luck to you.

Its your year Mikey almost.

You have to quit trying so hard, eventually the deer will become tame and walk into your cabin. Then its into the skillet   ;)    ;)    :D

Killdeer..........
How do the deer always keep their vitals covered by limbs, trees & bushes. It's always like that for me.

Gonna give it another try in Westchester with Jamie and Greg on Monday and/or Tuesday this week... Maybe one of those "tame deer" will give me a broadside at ten yards...

I bought a nice pair of binos. from one of the guys here on trad, couldn't wait to use them in the woods. Last week I walked in on a dirt trail and played the wind, I get in about 120yds. and I'm doing more glassing than moving, I spot a bruiser lying down chewing his cud, I count 5 pts' on one side but couldn't see the other. I'm a good seventy yds. away from him on an angle, so he's in the woods but I couldn't tell just how far until I get down the road more, he's facing at about my 2:30 position so he's facing the direction I am going in. I get about forty yds. further down the road without him busting me, but then I have a problem, if I keep going the woods will open up behind me so that if he is looking in my direction ( which he already is ) he will be able to silhouette me against this open spot and I get busted, or do I find a spot and hope he comes my way. Well I chose to keep going and yes I got busted, but what fun doing it. That buck was plenty mad, he just kept blowing at me for quite awhile.

Beats the heck out of sitting in a tree like I have done all these years.

Hey Mike, I have had deer come down a trail and I hid behind a tree waiting for them only to have them come on the other side of the tree not 10' from be, they sure did jump, and so did I.

Keep at it you'll only get better.

Good luck.
