A couple things I've learned about trad deer hunting...
« on: October 24, 2011, 03:03:00 PM »
I am a long time compound hunter that has recently switched to trad.

Here are a couple things I've learned the hard way about trad hunting compared to compound hunting....

1. It's surprising how often you can get away with pulling back your bow even from the ground.
Used to be, I could pull back waaaaay before the deer got to the shooting lane thanks to let off.
Now, I need to wait till they're pretty much there.
I draw, settle in and release. Some guys just draw and release in one motion. Pro's and cons each way.
Took me a while to get to the point of realizing that you can often get away with drawing back.
I let a few walk cause I was afraid of spooking them....might as well try it.

2. Wait till they're not looking to release.
Used to be my bow was fast enough I didn't need to shoot while they weren't looking.
Now I've had 3 deer either duck or jump my arrow at 15-20 yds. They all were interested in what I was and looking my way. I thought they were flukes....I don't think so anymore. The darn deer are just faster than my arrow.

Just some thoughts I've added to my note book.

Good luck!!
If some animals are good at hunting and others are suitable for hunting, then the Gods must clearly smile on hunting.~Aristotle

..there's more fun in hunting with the handicap of the bow than there is in hunting with the sureness of the gun.~ F.Bear
