First Self bow Kill
« on: October 29, 2011, 11:11:00 PM »
I had been a little reluctant to hunt with the Osage self bow I made this summer but I had been shooting it a good bit and it seemed to shoot hard and I had become a little more comfortable with it. So I had hunted with it the last couple of weekends . Well after missing a couple of does my confidence was starting to falter. I shot the bow some more and was hitting fine with it to 20-25 yards. So it must just be me,decided to give it one more chance before going back to Black Widow. I had found some White Oaks drooping and the wind was right to hunt them this afternoon. I got in the tree about 3:00 and had been there about 45 min when I saw a deer moving up the trail to me. As she got to the White Oak that was about 20 yards in front of me she stooped and looked around before picking up a acorn to munch on. As she moved to pick up another she got to about 14 yards and turned broad side. I focused on a spot in the crease behind her shoulder and started my draw, came to anchor and held long enough to let everything settle and let it fly. The arrow left the bow and covered the distance to the doe before she knew anything was going on, she never flinched before the arrow hit with a pop as it broke a rib going in up to the cap dip of the arrow. Before she made it 10 yards there was a large bloody area around the arrow so I knew she was bleeding good as she left.

I listened as she left and could tell she ran at least 100 yards. I gave her a few minutes and started the blood trail. I had  went about 35 yards and found half of my arrow.

The blood was easy to follow as the Magnus 1 had done its job. She had not gone much over 100 yards .  There is a special satisfaction from taking game with gear you make your self, I hope there is more to come.
