What a great frosty Indiana morning!
5:30 Sitting in truck with my buddy trying to decide where to go. Both had our own ideas. Mine won out today. After another 20 min. drive we were ready for about a 3/4mile hike and a killer of steep ridge.
8:00 Climber in oak tree and an east wind was telling me I didn't wear enough clothes. Big bodied 4 point walks through without giving me a shot. Smaller 4 point catches me off guard and I almost get off a 5 yard shot. Seconds later a doe busts me eating a pop-tart.
10:00 Large fox squirrel starts my way. After thinking my morning is probably over I decided to shoot. I drew, released, did everything I could possibly do wrong and missed by what seemed like 4 feet.
10:30 After thinking I'm the worst shot ever I hear leaves crunching behind me. 3 doe came up ridge and turned before they got to me. I did grab bow and stand just to make sure. Seconds later I see big body and rack coming up ridge. He didn't turn to go with the other deer. His nose was to the ground and he went straight for my scent wick. He stopped broadside at 12 yards. I didn't have a chance to think about my earlier miss and sent a Zwickey delta through the top of his heart and into the opposite side shoulder. He went about 30 yards downhill and ran into a tree full speed. Used a 55#@27" Don Dow Stik, GT blems and 170 Zwickey delta 4 blades.
