Looking for a Camo Crusher hat
« on: November 14, 2011, 09:18:00 PM »
I own several crushers that I picked up at an Orvis warehouse sale a couple years back. These are the same as the one shown below but in different colors:

Does anyone know of a maker of a felt/wool crusher like this but in camo? Don't care about a particular pattern, in fact I would prefer just a crusher with mixed colors in fist size blocks rather than a "Realtree" or Mossy Oak type pattern.

I did find this one at Day One Camouflage:

but I would prefer the style that I have if I can find one. Just in case I can't, anyone have any experience with Day One Camo? Please share your experiences if so.

I also know that Gray Wolf crushers are liked by some here and have looked at this hat as well. Just really like the style I have so this is a last ditch effort to find one before buying either the Day one or the Gray Wolf crusher.

Thanks in advance!

I've recently discovered the wool crusher too. One of the few brimmed hats i can shoot with.  I have a pendelton. I've thought about buying a light colored one and simply painting it the ASAT pattern.

I have one by browning. The brim is wider than in your pic but is the only one outta 3 I tried that I can shoot with.  Plus it has adjustable velcro strap for perfect sizing. Its mainly green with some different colors added in and not a pattern.

The bucket style hat shown by Day One is the only type of brimmed hat I can shoot with. I had my friend's wife make one for me out of fleece.

Cabelas has a wool crusher style hat, its the one i'm wearing in my avatar. It has a heavy monofilament sring to keep the brim shape that I removed for better string clearance.

I have two of the Day One hats, one ASAT the other maybe skyline?,  there quiet nice until the weather gets too cold for em.  Flip over for some orange if need be.  Like em for shooting the bow better than a boonie or brimmed hat.

I have a feeling that "crusher" means different things to different people... your Orvis hat looks like a crushable fedora... some other crusher hats are boonies and bucket hats.

I have a few Filson packer hats... one is touted as being a "crusher" but another one that I have in camo is certainly "crushable" or "packable".  Thing is... Filson doesn't make it in camo anymore.

I was also going to suggest King of the Mountain but theirs are "boonie" styles.  Same with Beagle Outdoor wear... excellent quality "boonie" or "bucket" style wool crushers - and available in camo as well as some solids and plaids.

Yeah, what's up with that? Are they turning their back on hunting? I have an old shelter cloth "wildfowl" hat (the kind with the buckle in front and the drop down ear flaps/neck gaiter) that they used to make in Hardwoods camo. Love that hat - short bill, plenty warm and versatile, and in a decent camo pattern. Now I'm paranoid of losing it because I can't replace it.

I noticed they have lots of new stuff in black for the urbanites, though. Guess they have to go where the money is.

Btw, this thread just convinced me to order a Day One wool crusher. Wife's gonna flip when she sees another hat...     :D

You are absolutely correct. I like the "Crushable Fedoras" and would love to find a camo one.

I am thinking about buying another in a tan or camel color and attempting to dye my own with Rit Dye. If I do I will be sure to post my success/failure.

Think I am also going to try one of the Day One bucket hats. Don't think I will like it but I figure I will give it a try.

I would be very interested in seeing your procedure and success/failure with the solid color "crushable fedora" and the Rit Dye.

I have been wanting to play around with that stuff and dyeing thrift shop style wool garments for a while.

I actually was holding the dyes in my hand at the craft store contemplating it...then my girlfriend reminded me I already had too many "projects"...

My plan was to mix the dye into spray bottles and use paper stencils on the fabric.

Not sure if that would work.

NOggin tops had some crushable wool felt hats with a fairly narrow brim..fedora style.

The one I had, I sprayed with Robinson Labs scent Killer so often, it turned camo...looked like it had mildew, mold, moss and well...it was just plain ugly!

I asked the then owner of Noggin about it and he laughed...he claimed that many of the hunter scent killer products have a peroxide base that literally bleaches the wool in the crusher to all it's native colors as they're made from chopped wool or something?

I made a camo covering with long tails that fit under the band around the hat....held it in place nicely!

I've gone to a boonie in wool... got in a trad with Adrondak Ken...love it more!

If I attempt it I think I will use the rit dye and a sponge as a blotter of sorts. I even have (read that to say the wife has) some sponge paint blotters shaped like leaves that I might be able to use. But will definately post the results.

I've had a camo crusher for about 25 years Steve, but I think I bought it from a local sporting goods store.  If I stumble across the real deal I'll get ahold of you.

I have a few wool crushers, just ordered a short brimmed fleece with ear flaps in camo from Plenty Coups Archery. I have heard good things about this hat...PR

do a google search using the phrase -- Browning Bismark felt camo hats. Several dealers offering them should come up. They even have more than one camo color in this hat.

Here is a pic. of the one I have used for years... It's definately my lucky hat... If I can't find it I don't even go out the door  hunting      :banghead:    .... Instead, I start tearing my "Man Room" [which when you live in a 24x30 ft log cabin, can be the whole house], the motorhome, the Scamp and my ole' bronco apart to see where it's hiding

I looked it over inside and it does say 100% Wool Felt. However I'm sorry, as it either has no manufactures name or I have worn it off over the years.

I truly think of this hat as indestructable and it does provide great protection even in the rain.  Which I need as I always wear glasses.
