Any Difference in How You Get There?
« on: November 16, 2011, 10:18:00 AM »
Say I want 200 grains up front.  Are there any advantages or disadvantages to going with a 100gr insert and a 100 gr broadhead, or standard insert and a 200 gr broadhead?

Yes and no.Either would work but I'm not a fan of 100 gr broadheads. The heavier ones usually have stronger, thicker blades. Also variety is limited in the 100 gr heads.

I don't think it would be a big difference but the heavier BH would give you just a tad bit higher FOC because the weight is just a tad bit further out front.

BTW, I use the 100gr inserts with 150gr Bh's because that is what I got to tune well (I already had the 150gr Bh's when I started and wanted to use them).

The difference, I suppose, would be in cutting surface.  You trade penetration for width or number of blades depending on the head.

And that opens a whole huge can o'worms as to which may be preferable and when or for what.

I think starting with a 100 gr. insert will open a lot more options in broahdheads to choose from. Personally, I use a 100 gr. insert and a 150gr. Stinger and a 5 gr. brass washer.

It has been my experience that the length of the 100 grain insert is long enough to change the spine a significant amount with certain setups. I have a bow that shoots 150 grain points with 100 grain inserts perfectly. If I install a standard insert and 225 grain points on the same arrow, I get erratic flight.

I'd rather have the extra weight in the head.....100 grain bhead aint enough hardware for me.
