Marion, IL. any Tradgangers near by?
« on: November 17, 2011, 11:13:00 AM »
Got word the other day I'll be working in and near Marion for the next 2 years. Think I missed the deer season this year but I'd like to chase Turkeys in the spring. Any helpful tips on where to hunt there? or any members want to hook up and meet? I need to go look up the regs. for IL. again and refresh my memory.

Mike, spring turkey is by drawing.  Apply NOW!.  Crab Orchard (next to Marion) or Williamson County.  You can get on public ground and have a fair change at some birds.  Happy to show you.

Drop me an email.

I'm not in Marion, but used to live in Centralia.  There's a lot of beautiful public land in the Marion area open to hunting.  Deer season goes until Jan 15th for bow hunters.  If you're ever out towards the Belleville area give me a shout.

I'm about 3 hours north of you but get down that way once in a while.  You haven't missed the season, either.  Even if you can't qualify as a resident, you can get an anterless tag OTC for $25, I think, plus an NR hunting license.  Plenty of game and good hunting ground in the area.

Fletcher is correct. We hunted the Crab Orchard Refuge a few years back. Plenty of public ground in ILL and yes the non-rez for anterless will run you around $75 tops. If you get lucky and fill your tag you can buy more OTC at Wally World for $25 each I think.

Our season in TN closes early this year on Jan 1 instead of the 15th and we might make a last minute run to Marion and hunt the late season for a long weekend ???

Well, I had to look Marion up on the map.  You're gonna be about as far South as I am North.  You're not too far from the Shawnee National Forest though.  Looks like you'll have plenty of stumpin' ground.  Hope the move goes well.

Thx for all the replies guys..much appreciated!
I should be there in 2-3 weeks. Give me some time to get settled in and figure the job out and I'll contact you. Good to hear I can get a Doe tag still, I was there about 5-6 years ago and they were $5 and all you wanted, $25 is still dirt cheap if you ask me, out of state buck was $500 which was out of my budget at the time. Hope someone wants some extra meat cause I won't have a place to keep most of it.
    ;)
Looking forward to meeting some of you.

I'm from Vienna, but lived within sight of the Marion City limits for a few years.  And for all the hunting opportunities I'd move back there tomorrow if IL itself wasn't in such a mess.

What do you mean by that? It couldn't possible be worse than CA.    :knothead:

I am up Northwest of there but hunt and fish down in that neck of the woods a bunch. If CA is more messed up than IL I don't want to go there.

To tell the truth I don't know who the customer is right now but it has something to do with the Obama money grants to bring rural communities up to speed by linking small towns with fiber optics. I'll be splicing fiber as a contractor for a company I've worked for in the past called BSI.

I just found out Marion is just kind of ground zero I'll be all over southern IL. I was looking to get a cheap apt. or house but now it looks like I'll be in hotels because of the traveling involved. Remains to be seen really, I have to get there and check out the travel involved and the financial logistics of getting a place verses a hotels.

Thank you for the offer,I'll take you up on it.

One way or the other we can get ya fixed up.  Southernmost IL is big and rural but not that difficult to get around in.  You can drive from the Mississippi River to the Ohio River in about 2 hours and from Marion to Cairo in an hour or so.  Plenty of country to hunt in between from the bluffs and hills in Shawnee for big woods hunting to the farmed ground between the rivers stretching from the tip of the state up...

Sounds like you are contracted to the "new rural infrastructure" stuff.  There bis a big push to have all municipalities ie. schools librarys hospitals hooked to fiber asap.  Clearwave is the primary local service provider for this venture and I and my wife have spoken to them about this effort.  Frontier is the primary phone service provider.  Seems there will be a big bundle line run to the echool at the end of our drivway from town eight miles south.  We kind of "asked" if we could get in on that line.

I have to use a BB Hotspot right now as there is not even any DSL in our neighborhood.
