I don't like seeing bear when I'm deer hunting!, so far they haven't gotten down this way in N.J. except for a few stragglers. If I were allowed to pack a side arm I wouldn't mind seeing them as I would have some protection encase one decided it was snack time.

They shot an 800+ pound bear in North Jersey!

I give you credit for standing your ground while it was coming at you, but I guess that is what they say one should do.

Ken,

I wasn't concerned about being a snack, she wasn't looking for me. Not my first time withing spitting distance of a bear either. However the only thing that had me uneasy was the cubs. That could have made things more interesting than they were.

Oh Yeah, I've heard about not getting between the mother and the cubs, like being between a rock and a hard place.

I edited my above answer because I remembered they shot that 800+ pound bear in North Jersey, that is a big blacky.

Most times they will not want to share space with you cubs or no cubs. In  New York you can not carry a side arm while bow hunting.......although some do! Bears are kind'a cool!

I was out this afternoon. Seen 2 does but not close enough for "JK" to fling an arrow at. Will be out this Thur/Fri...back to work Sunday night.

Things are quieting down here now with the family, not much time to bowhunt this fall so I'm really looking forward to the Winter hunts in Jersey. Hopefully my new Fedora will arrive before then...

I've been real close to bears a couple times myself Charlie,and the only time I got a little concerned was when 2 cubs came across a trail about 15yds. from me.I looked around for mom and hoofed it out of there to my treestand.
I'll be out with the bow Monday and next weekend.It ain't over 'til it's over.

Still taking my homemade Hill style longbow,had 3 does at 20yds. on Sat. Was hunting at a friends place near Rochester,we both had longbows, I saw 15 to 20 deer walking nose to tail all in a row in the morning, no shot too far,he has a ton of deer at his place, saw 6 different bucks also,I was there for does only, no buck tags left for me, it was just nice to see that many deer.
