Ok, where to begin? My wife and daughter told me last night that they were going shopping today and I would have to find something to do....Uhhhh yeah.
So this morning after my coffee and some time gathering all my gear. I headed out to find a new spot to hunt as I haven't been out much lately due to the gun season. I get to the farm and spent most my afternoon finding a great new spot. It was a small draw right next to a very large overgrown bedding area with a old fence separating the two. This fence and the steep washout in the bottom of this draw made a great funnel area. With about 40 yards separating the two I found three worn out trails coming from the thicket around the head of this washout. In the middle of this intersection was a honey locust tree that the deer where really hitting. Crushed chewed up bean pods everywhere. THIS is the place. I hung a stand in the center of the three trails in a cedar tree. I was covered up like a new born baby sitting in there when it was finished. I headed back to the truck and drove up to get a drink.
On my way back I stopped about a half mile away from the spot, got dressed and told my wife where I was. Grabbed the Zipper and headed to the tree. On my way back to my stand I look over in the thicket and look what I see. Now in Kentucky we only get one buck tag and although I am very happy with the buck I took back in September this site kinda made me a little sick. Bedded about 18 yards off the two track....
The wind was pretty strong and I would have had no problem slipping up on this guy as about 15 yards behind him was a fence next to a wide open field. He just laid there like he knew. I snapped 3 or 4 picts of him and just kept moving. Oh well it is what it is. Hopefully he will make it through one more day of our gun season. I figured him at around the 150" mark. I had driven right by this deer twice.
Oh well, after that I made it to my tree and got hooked in. Here was my view, you can see one of the worn out trails in this first shot.
About 5 o'clock I see a doe coming my way. She was very skittish (like she had been harassed for the last month) and finally turned like she heard something and disappeared back into the thicket. Around 15 minutes later what I think was the same doe appeared again and heading my way. She milled around for a while on the other side of the old fence and then finally jumped it. Oh that clanging fence noise is beautiful. She stepped onto one of the trails that would lead her to my setup and I knew it was on. She got to an opening about 15 yards in front of me and perfectly quartering away. I tightened the sting and the Zipper sent the shaft quick and the lighted arrow nock told me the hit was perfect.
She tore out of there and I watched her stop in the draw behind about 60 yards away. She stood there for a few seconds and tumped over. What a fantastic end to a great day. I remember thinking as I walked up on her Whoa she's a whopper. I had to weigh her because I knew you guys would ask and she pushed them down at 153 lbs. gutted.
