New String Options
« on: July 16, 2007, 10:06:00 AM »
Time for a new string.  Wondering is there anything new out there a man might need to know about.  Been shooting a FF string on a 56 lb 62 inch Shafer Silvertip recurve.  Had always shot a dacron string until I ordered this bow and now I don't like the dacron except for the quietness but after shooting a FF the dacron feels spongy or like a rubber band to me at anchor.  Is there anything out there that is low stretch and quieter than FF.  Is there any sponser here to contact to make a good string.

450 plus.....low stretch  but just enough stretch to be quiet.  seems like every bow i buy anymore...the bowyer sends one with it and strongly recommends using it.

Like Sean said. 450+ has it all!

Check for consistent thickness of the serving.  Had a new string with a thicker serving and it made my broadheads, not field points, shoot left 8, 10 inches at 30 yds.  Can't tell you how long it took to figure out that one.

I like D-97.  For me, it's quieter than 450 plus on my longbows.

I like TS-1+ for quietness in a high performance string.

Does anyone know of a good string maker who is going to Denton Hill that can make a D-97 bowstring and a TS-1+. I am having trouble finding someone. tom massaro

Yup, for me it is D97 as well, it just seems quieter and holds up really well for me. Shawn

450+ has the least stretch/creep of any of the high performance materials.  Stretch isn't what makes a string quiet--it adds a "twang".

Which material is best is like asking which bow is best--depends on who you ask.  How well a string performs and how quiet it is will vary with how it's made, and how well it's made.

My personal choice is Dynaflight '97, but 450+ and 8125 are also very good materials.  I'm partial to BCY products.

Chad (LBR) is also a great stringmaker and a sponsor here.  He just sent me 4 great dyna 97 stings.  Tough to beat.

Had the good fortune of giving Chad Weaver a call today and talking strings.  He has been such a good man to deal with for my strings over the last several years.

Anyway, I have been resistant to change from B500 because it has been such a good friend to me...reliable and quiet.  However, you guys posting picking up 10 fps convinced me to give the other strings a whirl.  I have a bow that is somewhat slower than my others at 150 fps verses 170 for the others.  I chatted with Chad about string options and he is going to make me an 8125 with a shorter serving and 62 for the serving.  I'm sticking my toes out of the dacron closet

Mike Harbison just made me a couple of strings from a material called Excel; I think it is similar to 452 material, not sure.  Anyway, it is very quiet, and seems to add a bit of pop as well.
