Sure, if it held a good edge before it will hold one now. You will end up with some rust pits in the blade, I wouldn't try to get them all out, you'd have to remove quite a bit of steel for that.

sticshooter,
I realize it won't be in the condition it was when my Father owned it. I found it today at my Mom's helping her out with whatever she needed  around the house.

I found it outside under the back porch in a box. It was my Father's knife, not sure where he got it. He served and retired with 21 yrs in The United States Marine Corps.

It will be two years this July 19th that we lost the "GUNNY" to cancer. Who said the LORD don't work in mysterious ways..(Finding the knife)

Being able to see a nice blade would be nice. It's a hunk of steel for sure.

Mike If you like I can try and clean up the blade and did you have a sheath for it? If not I can maybe whip one up so ya can take in the wood this fall. Now mind you there are alot better knife makers on here then me. and i am sure they could do better then me so if ya wanna wait that's fine. I understand completely. Just email and let me know.<><

MJB, I don't know how "clean" you want it, but I would water sand the blade with 400 grit wet or dry paper and dab a little mustard all over the blade. It will give it a nice patina and hide some of the pits in the blade. As for the handle, just rub it with some 0000 steel wool and put on a coat of Danish oil type product. Put an edge on it and you'll have a good usin' knife with some character.

Whatever you do just use it. I think it would make you smile more than putting it in a closet.I'm with jdupre except once you get the blade sanded enough that the surface rust is gone then cold blue it.

After doing a bit of research on this knife, it looks  very familiar to a WWII USMC Marine Bolo knife (1939 - 1945).

I believe that you can just make out USMC (with something under it) about 2"-3" up the blade!!!!!

I'd say make a big "mountain man" style sheath and carry it around with you and USE IT!!!!!

I'm sure "The GUNNY" would smile.....

Chuck,
Yep USMC is on the blade. Just came from the Cemetery with Mom, it's two yrs today. Told "The GUNNY" the plans for the knife.

I know he smiled Chuck           And I heard
OOH-RAH..

Had a minor set-back/delay at the Post Office. They weren't sure about shipping it and will get back with me.

Mike

Daniel update it's on the way          :campfire:

I clean up knives like that all the time, spray it with some wd40, then sand it with sandpaper, working your way to lighter grits, just keep it soaked in wd40 while sanding
