DIY Armguard?????

Hello All,

I am wanting to make myself a leather armguard, and i havent done much leather work. I am wondering if there is a specific type or cut of leather that i need for it to work the best?

Also, any reccomendations for where to buy some leather thts fairly priced? And any other advice your willing to give on how to make it right.

If you have any DIY armguards i would love to see pics or yours.

a nice 11 oz veg tan leather- preferably something off the side or back- no bellies or shoulders.
some shockcord, and buttons of your choice( plastic buttons, antler, wood etc etc)

Here is one that I made to match my ACS CX.  Got the leather in a grab bag at Hobby Lobby for around 6 bucks.  Add a few deer horn buttons, stops and shock cord and you will have a nice guard for just a few bucks.  I used some mink oil on it and it really softened the leather up really well.  It is really comfortable to wear.

Here's one I made for my Dad last year for Christmas. Just a little trial and error. It's not too hard, you'll figure it out. If you search on tradgang you'll find a bunch of pics, just go with one you like!

Here is one that I made out of 9-10oz vege-tanned leather to match my quiver with my family crest on it. Included quiver tooling pic for reference.
 
 
Leather: Tandy Leather Online - good prices on everything leathercraft...tools, leather, buckles,etc (you can also find nice 6oz stuff at Hobby Lobby in 9 x 11 sheets and it seems to tool well and are only a couple of bucks.

Buttons: Jean buttons from Michael's Craft Store

Cord: Rubber peep-sight alignment tubing from a local archery shop.

I really like the knife sheath idea!...I wish I would have thought of that on the one I made above....well, good excuse for another project! Nice work!

For me I like an armguard that wraps well around the forearm so that no buttons, metal, or antler or whatever hits the string. I want only the leather to hit the string if at all. If the string hits anything it can shorten the string's life. When hunting you want enough stretch in your cord to allow for thick clothing. So just snug when barearmed with enough to use it wearing your thickest cold weather gear you use.
