they are tough buggers to kill it seems! sorry about the last pic, but the last pic I used a Zephyr Sasquatch and that seemed to slow this bugger down

Squirrels get alot of my attention here in NH where the deer population is thin. In my experience, squirrels are tough to kill - so tough in fact if they were deer sized elephant gun calibers would be necessary!! Seriously though, I've lost many well hit grays with anything other than old broadheads. Hope this is helpful

Birdbow is correct; I try to stick with broadheads too. I had a red squirrel run off (but not far), with a Judo tip in him. Broadheads tend to pin them down. Always think up plenty of excuses too ("wind picked up", "deflected off a branch", "jumped the string", etc.), because they are not easy to hit w/arrows...LOL!!!

Just tried a new-to-me squirrel head. Took a .38 case, drilled out the spent primer(make sure the primer is spent) Then drilled out to fit the thread/shaft of a 175 field tip through. Total weight is 230 grains.

Went out side and shot a squirrel just behind it's head. No tracking required. Dead in a matter of seconds and anchored to the spot.

Next thing I want to try is cutting the .38 case down some to gaurentee the field tip threads catch inside the insert and put a washer between the .38 case and the field tip.

Anyone here know how to post pictures who won't mind posting a picture of the head and squirrel for me? Please PM me with your e mail addy and I'll e mail you the picture to post on here.

Thanks

I've yet to harvest a squirrel with the lb, but hit a few with the training wheels last year.  Guy at the 'shop recommended "adder heads"- fit in between the shaft and the field point.  I guess its like a washer cut to square then folded back to expose the cut edges.

I have so much fun shootin these critters I sometime wonder why I spend so much time after deer. Seems some form of penetration would work best for the weeny weight I shoot 50lb & under. Once from a deer stand I smoked one @ 10 yds. while it clung to the side of a tree @ eye level. At the time I used a 7/8" flat washer behind a field point and sent that rascal into orbit. After hitting the ground he ran off never to be found.Once with my 55 lb. longbow I hit on in the rump with a judo and he ran up a tree in my yard and I had to get some assistance from my 22 to fetch my arrow. Pound for pound if deer were this tough we would never recover anything!.

ive dusted over 30 with my slip-on broadhead, i know an amish fellow who just loves to eat them.  if you hit them directly the field point will penetrate about 3-4" and the slip-on will slide down your shaft. for glancing or angle blows, it rips them up.

my stumpers are a little to soft, they are mainly for just practice

I wish I could hit one directly.  I seem to give more hair cuts that kills when it comes to squirrels.  Maybe if I can find a 5 inch diameter broadhead or blunt  :)
