Birthday Buck
« on: December 09, 2011, 09:21:00 AM »

The late season is in full swing here in Michigan and I really enjoy hunting in the snow. Ironically we had a 3" snowfall overnight, our first of the season, and am very thankfull for the events and outcome prior to the white wash. I closed the office early yesterday to celebrate my 41st birthday. My plan was to hunt behind the house and have a venison burger dinner with my wife. The wind was out of the west at the house and I really need a north wind to make for a good hunt in this location but really wanted to have some alone time in the woods. When I got to the river bottom the wind was being channeled by the river to a south west direction, really bad. I don't hunt here very often as there is a really low poputaion dew to EHD in our area the last two years and figured I was not in a great place anyway so just sit back and enjoy the evening. A couple of squirrels got my attention with a little rustle of leaves but no deer. I was ready to get down and go enjoy a hot meal when a noise from the east got my attention. A buck was headed my way! He came right down the run that I needed and it looked like the arrow flew true (I have struggled this year picking a hair). I quietly got out and went home to eat. After dinner I grabed my light and pack and went after him. The trail proved to be short and easy to follow, the drag was a bugger though-I had to go up a very steep ravine. This was a great way to celebrate a birthday.

Happy birthday and congratulations on a fine buck!  I do a lot of hunting in the bluff country of southwest Wisconsin, and those ravines can be real buggers.  It helps to have a strong son to help!
