GPP for low draw weight hunting arrow?
« on: December 11, 2011, 04:29:00 PM »
I've got a bow I really like shooting that draws 42lbs at my draw length. Really good accuracy and I'm very consistent with it.

Although this is unlikely to be my 'go to' bow for whitetails I wouldn't mind taking it out to the woods every once in a while (particularly if my shooting is in a slump with my heavier bows).

What would be an appropriate GPP arrow for this bow be in a hunting situation?

I don't like going much below 450grs for deer, that would be 'bout 11gr per pound for your bow. Should still shoot fine and give good penetration, especially with a good sharp 2bl head.

i think that common sense should prevail.

small game, yes.  whitetail, sure.  hogs and bigger game, umm, probably not.

kill range will mostly be inside 20 yards, i'd think.

in all instances i wouldn't go below 9gpp (380grs).  going higher will be dependent on how comfy you feel with the arrow's trajectory at all distances and how you aim.  i would definitely consider going over 400grs, up to 450grs if possible.

what you need bring to the hunt ... consistent accuracy at 20yds or less, under hunting venue conditions, yes.  sharp coc broadhead, yes.  knowing the proper shot to take, yes.  praying for added luck, yes.

I was shooting a similar weight bow this year (roughly 45@29). My arrows were 465 gr. I always got 2 holes, but the arrow hung up inside the animals. They died just the same.
