Nutters?

There were a number of people on this site, a few years back, that liked a small game point they called 'Nutters' (I think that's what they were called.).  I tried searching the archives for the how-to build them threads and could not find them.  Do any of you still use them and know where the thread went to?

No, and no , but just screw a proper size nut tight on the end of a cheap wood arra.

I use them for skwerls and bunnies, sure.  They were discussed during talks about building CHEAP small game arrows.  Essentially taper the front as normal and screw on a 3/8" nut, hence the name. I tend to coat the area with super glue before and after adding the nut.

Others find that using a wingnut increases their hitting power.   Whatever.

I find that they knock the wits out of a skwerl, but may not kill it.  I pick the critter up, hold it against the tree and whack it with my Shrew hawk.  game over  next.

I also like the nutters cause I really don't fear shooting them up in the air (trees) and wondering who I might be hurting when they land.

Two 3/8" nuts weigh 160 grains, and you just scrrew them on a tapered shaft. I glue mine with epoxy so they don't come off. They hit like a hammer and are cheap. Used with cheap wood dowels from the hardware store, they are as close to disposable arrows as you will find.

Weren't they made out of dowell rods and scrap feathers to be as cheap as possible? True "one way" arrows.

Yep, but you could make them from "two-way" materials if you wanted. They definitely made a hard hitting arrow.

Nothing to be scared of Ryan.  Imagine a broadhead or even a field point missing a skwerl and going up, up, up   crap   run ! ! ! !

I used to really worry about that stuff.

now. . Nutters might anger you some but I doubt they will cause any real hurt if one hits you on the way back down.

I've been wondering how I could go about shooting at squirrels without going broke by losing arrows and heads, this sounds like it might be what I am looking for.

As far as dowel rods, how would I know what size to get for them to shoot right from my 54 pound longbow.

Didn't they use cheap ramin dowels...sand them down by hand till they spined right?

I tried it on Chudo (?) and the nuts pushed up as the wood was too soft to hold the nuts on impact

Believe so Doc, before ramins were, banned? Seems like an sanded taper but I don't recall exactly how long it was.

I use nutters on cedars too. I taper the shaft and screw on a 3/8" hex nut. A bit of super glue will lock the nut on and harden the cedar tip sticking out.  These are great squirrel heads. A bit of penetration from the arrows tapered point and the nut for shock. Never had a squirrel run off after being hit with a nutter but have from every other small game point I've tried.
