Converted my buddy from compound
« on: December 17, 2011, 10:51:00 AM »
My buddy made the "mistake" of shooting my longbow, and now of course he wants one.  I think he draws around 28", and I want to help get him set up. I'm thinking about a 45# bow for starters, and maybe some GT 35-55 arrows.  Should I have the arrows cut or leave them full length?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

45# bow is perfect bow weight. Problem with beginners is they think that they need 60# bows which is a big mistake and can very easily be over bowed. I use the Carbon Tech 35-55 arrows cut to 28 1/2" with a 175 grain tip with a 45#-50# bow weights. I normally like the arrow an inch to two longer than the draw length.

My buddy made the same mistake this year while we were shooting in my backyard.  Funny thing is we had shot 3d together and I was shooting my Black Widow recurve.  He shot that and liked it but when I got out my Hill longbow his eyes lit up and he had to have one.  He was going to order a longbow from Cabelas but I told him I would take him to the Trad Expo in Kalamazoo MI in Jan. and he could shoot many different bows to find out what he truly likes before he spends his money.  Not sure if you have any expos like that in Texas but you might find a shop or trad shoot where he could shoot different bows.  I wanted my buddy to shoot the r/d longbows so he knows what they are like before he goes with a d style.

Actually,  I'm conspiring with his wife to get him a recurve here for Christmas.   We are trying to get a used recurve, some arrows that I will fletch up for him, and a quiver.

It will be a blast to have him to hunt with. We have been fishing buddies for about 10 years and neither one of has enough sense to quit.

While he was shooting my bow I took note of his draw length so I can get him outfitted.

Now, if any of you have a used recurve or longbow in the 45# range that would fit a $200-250 budget, I'm all ears!   :readit:

Keep checking the classifieds.  Lots of nice bows show up there.  It might be tough to get it done for christmas.  I have a #50 lb. Take down he could use until you get him fully set up with his own.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

I just bought a used bear from the classifieds, and it should be perfect fit.  He's going to be pretty excited.
