I see you are in Maryland so not much colder than where I am in Northern Virgina unless you are out there on the NW edge.  I like Under Armor Cold gear as a base with lite wool long johns next.  The Under Armor does a nice job of wicking away the sweat from walking in and climbing up the tree.

I like UA as well, usually not cold enough for a mid layer here.  Fleece outerwear does the trick

A good merino wool. I use Smartwool, but there are several good ones available. If I need more, I add a silk first layer.

Light weight Justin Charles merino wool is my favorite base layer.  I used polypro for years, like the JC wool a lot more.

Smartwool for me has held up great, my most treasured piece of clothing. What I like, is the tag say 100% merino wool.

Silk next to the skin.

Under Armor actually makes you colder in cold weather if you are not moving around because it's so tight and traps no air. Loose fitting Merino is the best and sitting out this morning when it was 20 degrees out proved it.
