Stormy Kromer Short bill hats 'n longbows
« on: October 09, 2006, 10:55:00 PM »
I need a good huntin' hat.  I found the Stormy Kromer short bill that I really like.  They say it's for bowhunting.  I just wondered if any of you have shot a long stickbow with one of these on.  I HATE it when my string hits the bill of my hat.

Thanks!

Been meaning to get one but haven't actually tried one as of yet. Didn't Ron La Clair have something to do with getting that hat made specifically for bowhunting?

Those kromer hats are kind of a big deal in da U.P. I haven't tried one though.

I've got one,  and my string hits the brim if I shoot normally.  I bent the brim slightly  down and move the hat to the side just a little and then I don't have to worry about it at all.  They are very nice hats.

Yeah, I heard they have a new short billed one, for us bowhunters. Do they have one that switches from camo to blaze orange for walking around during gun season?

I have a regular Kromer, and a pair of sharp scisors made the brim short enough for me.  I look like a homeless Wensel, but thats O.K. I guess.  Make that a much younger, taller Wensel.

Woodduck,
Gray Wolf has several different kromers that will switch from the blaze orange to either of the predator patterns or their new pattern.  They are on the sponsors list.

The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Of course Kromer also makes a brimless version as well. No brim, no worry about string interference.

Great hats. They are the "Official Hat" of Ron's camp, ShrewHaven. I haven't worn mine yet this year, it's too warm. But once the temps drop below 40, it never comes off my head. Yes, the shorter bill was done at Ron's request. If I'm not mistaken, they can be had from Ron, or Kustom King.

The Stormy Kromer is to Michigans UP what the cowboy hat is to the West.

GREAT,GREAT hat.

Actually Randy Gustafson who is a bona fide Yooper from da U.P. and I collaborated to get Kromer to make the short brim version for bowhunters.

It's been pretty popular up there even for non bowhunters. Seems that the locals have discovered that when they're wearin the shorter brim in da bar, they can see the clock on the wall without havin to tip their head back. That way they know when Happy Hour starts.     :bigsmyl:

You can get a Kromer on Randys web site  http://www.northwoodsoutfitters.com/

I would get a Stormy Kromer, but my wife is highly allergic to wool so I avoid buying wool items to bring into the house.  I can't find them in any other material.  I use a short-billed acrylic stocking cap/jeep cap like Radar wore in MASH.  I do like a short bill to keep out the sun and hide my eyes from the deer while keeping out of the way of the bowstring should I decide to ever come to full draw.

The Kromer is a great hat.  But, there's no need for a brimless or short-brim.  When you're shooting your bow, just turn the conventional Kromer backwards.  Then turn it back the normal way when you want to look, well, normal.

I just cut a notch in the bill - adds a third anchor reference.

That Stormy K looks like a very servicable topper.

My cheapo hat is a one of those surplus boonie caps - short floppy brim all-round. Cute, too!

The trouble I always had by turning my hat backwards was I never knew if I was comin or goin.         "[dntthnk]" ....   "[laffsmyl]"

I turn my ball cap around when I shoot out back, but I don't like to do it.  I'm about 25 years too old for that look!

I saw one Barry Wensel had on in the woody photo with gene. The pattern was like a Woolrich-style brown plaid. Looked all over, can only find the generic red, gray, camo or orange.. any leads here?

I just recently got one and I love it, had no problems shooting with it and it kept my head nice and toasty on those cool mornings on the river in Alaska.
