Let's see your river cane arrows!
« on: December 25, 2011, 06:01:00 PM »
I'm laid up for a while and got some river cane out of the garage that's been drying for some time. I've never made any river cane arrows and thought it would be neat to see some pictures of some you all have made. Thanks, looking forward to seeing them.

I searched "river cane" but didn't yield many results. Was hoping for some inspirational pictures.

I'll have to take some pics but I've got 2 that I think turned out well. I'm still experimenting to see what flies the best from my selfbows.

I'll come back and post pics when I get them taken and uploaded.

You might have better luck on the PA forum.  I have seen a few on here, but there's lots over that way.  I have several that I have made and really like, but don't have any pictures of them.  I'll be out of town bird hunting for a week, but I'll try and get some up when I get back, if I think about it.  Good luck!

Benjy, Are those made with the same cane you gave me at Hickory last year? You make them almost too perfect! I haven't made mine yet but will this winter.
Chris Cade(as in Semo's post) builds exceptional cane arrows. He got lots of pointers from Art Butner and ran with it. Art makes the best cane arrows(and arrows in general)I've ever shot or seen.
I'll post pics of mine here Perry so you don't have to send your email.

I did a buildalong that is over in the How To archives on Bamboo Arrows.  Here is a link if you have not seen it yet.  A bunch of pictures over there.

Here's a Dozen spined 60-65# I just made for a friend.

Enjoy!

These are a set of hill cane hunting arrows I made a few years ago.

...and a set Art Butner made for me with my hill cane..

...these are footed with maple. Look at the last 4" at the point end. Note the lighter color at the tips.

This is a set that Dana Montgomery made for the son of a friend that passed away...

You can see that I hardly reduce the nodes at all. I do compress them most of the time. Both Art and Dana reduced the nodes quite a bit.

Made these up for late season deer hunting. These are the first ones I ever made and ever shot, man are they tough.

Pat, that is the same cane. It is actually tonkin cane and not river cane. It makes a great shaft. You better get busy!

Here are some pictures of some that I made starting from cutting them down.
