New to carbons, is this normal?
« on: July 18, 2007, 07:58:00 PM »
Well, I decided to try some carbons, so I bought some Carbon Express 45/60 shafts, expecting them to be similar to a few Beeman 500's I have. These things spine at 80#(!) I figured they would spine at 60# or so.
Is this normal, and can I get them to fly out of a 52# longbow, or should I get something else?

I shoot 45/60 Carbon Express Rebels from my Black Widow TFV. Bow is 51# @ 26" ... My draw is just under 26" ... Arrow shaft is 28" with a 100gr. brass insert and 125gr. broadhead. This works for me.

If ya leave them long and add at least 250 grains up front , yes. carbons are spined based on 14" centers, when done the trad. way 13" centers they spine way higher. A 35/55 is close to 75#s and a 75/95 is like 120#s. Shawn

Yup, cut to 28.5"s ya will need at least 325 up front to get them to bareshaft, remeber a fletched arrow even 30#s over spine will hit where ya look afte  afew shots as your brain adjust, flight will just be terrible. Shawn

Hate to hijack this thread, but I just decided to switch to carbons as well.  I picked up a beman 470 bare shaft and started to try and tune it.  I got to taking off about 2 inches with 65 grains up front and it is coming into line.  I assume that I will have to take off about another inch to get it to take about 100 to 125 up front.  BTW I am using a 55# bow at 28.  I assume this is right because the arrow started way nock left and then as I shortened it it started coming to center.  I put in a heavier tip ad the nock went back to the left again.

I ran out of light last night, so I should be able to get it dialed in tonight.

Another question...  I did this with one bare shaft only.  I then read that you have to have a few fletched as well to see how they react against each other...  Am I doing it wrong?  I was hoping to get the one and then when I get the bare shaft dialed in I could go get the others made to that.  What am I missing?

SCATTERSHOT,

Woods are spined a 26 inches whereas carbons and aluminuns are spined at 28 inches.  Your 45/60 shafts should work fine for your setup provided you go through the proper tuning process.

Don't get in hurry and trim too much off at a time.  Trim 1/4 inch at a time til they start getting close then you may only want to trim 1/8 or 1/16 inches at a time.

Since you are shooting a longbow you'll probably want them to spine a tad weak.

Your Beman 500s have a deflection of .500

Your Carbon Express 45/60s have a deflection of .400

If you're looking for a Carbon Express arrow with a deflection close to .500 then look at these. I rounded off slightly.

CX 100 - .530

CX 200 - .460

Maxima 150 - .500

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm up to 250 grains up front, and they are starting to come around. The bow is a Pronghorn, and has FF string on it.

Brett gives good advice.Remember when bareshafting ya always want it to be ever so slightly weak, as when ya add feathers it will stiffen ever so slightly. Shawn
