Concidering arrow straightness in tuning
« on: December 27, 2011, 06:07:00 PM »
Most attention is on arrow spine and length when tuning a shaft, but does arrow straightness(.006,etc.)factor in also? I've been trying something lately where I test 2 bare shafts, one .006, and the other .003 in straightness. Everything else being equal(same length, point weight, bow, etc.)Out to 20yds, .003 flies straight to target with nock end pointing right back at me. Arrow .006 still pretty good, but has a slightly weak reaction(nock left). I'm a right handed shooter. Both arrows 400 spine, just different straightness factor. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed or tried this.   :archer:

To some, they need to measure to the thousanths, but to me, as long as I'm on the right construction site I'm doing perfect.  I honestly don't see that little bit of difference making any noticeable difference for hunting purposes.  Just my .02

I agree with the others above, even .006 is pretty darn straight!

Also, you need to put them on a spine tester to see what they actually spine. Just because they are.400, doesn't mean they both acually spine the same. I've seen big differences...company to company, model to model, doz. to doz.

Spine tester doesn't lie and is sometimes an eye opener!

Thanks everyone, especially Guru! I was just wondering if it would be advantagous at all to buy the tighter straightness tolerance(and more $ too!)shafts.    :archer2:

I've heard the difference in a .003 and an .006 is usally at the ends. Some recommend cutting a 1/2" off the nock end before you start your tuning, but I agree I don't think you could tell a difference. Not at the speed or distances we shoot at.

Turn two shafts back to back that are .006 out and you now have .012. Would be more advantagous to crown all the same and orient down on the shelf.......Art

I agree with above and Guru but will add one thing. There is also the little man in the back of your head. He is the picky little guy, my wife calls me ahh him anal. While I am totally aware that I don’t shoot good enough to tell the difference between .006 and .003, you can see the difference on a spin tester and when I see that .006 wobble more than a .003 that little man won’t shut up and he just bugs me the whole time I shoot so I shoot the .003, the little man stays quite and I enjoy myself more and shoot with more confidence and that is worth the little extra cost to me.

I agree with the general comments above, but just because the arrow is classified as .003 or .006 doesn't mean much for testing purposes.  Those "straightness" numbers only mean the shaft has no more than that amount of runout; either one could be perfectly straight.  You'd have to measure the actual runout of each shaft, and even then you'd have to figure out how the arrow performed by rotating the nock to different locations.  Then there's the additional issue of spine for wood and carbon shafts that adds yet another variable.  If it bothers you, test each one and put them in two piles; good arrows and practice/rabbit arrows.  You'll probably just get more rabbit arrows from the .006 shafts than the .003; but not by much. Otherwise, yup, most of us just don't shoot well enough to notice the difference anyway.
