broadhead weight vs field point weight

I am shooting wood arrows with 145gr field points but I am wondering how much differnce it would make as far as arrow flight if I shot 125gr or 160gr broadheads. Any opinions?

It will stiffen your dynamic spine about 5 lbs.

125 will stiffen the arrow, the 160 will weaken it arrow..

I use 160grn FP and BH on My arrows.

I am shooting 61lbs @ 27 1/2" with 65-70 woodies and they fly great with 145gr field points. So would it be possible to shoot 125gr or 160gr out of the same bow and get the same results?

I don't shoot woods but always make my field tips weight match my broadheads weight.

To keep everything the same if you went to the heavier point then you would need to shorten your arrow just a tad. If you went to the lighter point then you would need a tad longer arrow.

Maybe I'll just try some different weight field points first. I am wanting to try some three blades for turkey and hog and just think the Snuffers are a little big.

the 160 will be better then the 125 with Your set-up.

You might have to cut 1/4" if using the 160 and might have to add footing if You go with the 125..

I like to use a FP that weighs about 25 gns more because the BH makes the arrow longer weakening the spine.

I'm curious if 15 to 20 grains is enough to show a noticeable change?

I thought that might be the case.

A lot of guys around here know a lot more than me, but I haven't noticed much difference in a change of less than 25 grains. (disclaimer: I once noticed a change AT 25 grains, but I think I was right on the cusp as far as a weak spine. Normally, I wouldn't expect that to be the case.)

Depends... if the spine is close to perfect with the 145 then probably not but if it is at either end of the range then it could show up.. As an example I’ve had woodies that I thought were flying perfectly (bareshaft and fletched) with 160; then on a wild hair tried a 190 and flight and forgiveness improved substantially.

Has been my experience that some broadheads can bend a shaft a tad more than a field point of equal weight. Must have to do with some of the broadhead weight being further forward.
I guess what I am trying to say is the only way to know, is to try them. lol

My Hills sharpen down to 157 grains, I agree they will soften the spine slightly when compared to 160 grain blunt. El Grande Grizzlies will do the same thing, but in my bows it only shows up in borderline spines on individual arrows. For example, if 55 with 160 broadheads are just right and a 52 will still be good with a blunt, but can  possibly be slightly soft with the broadhead. On the other hand I have also found that broadheads tend to fly better and flatter for the weight than glue-on field points and blunts.

Here is my experence.......tune the arrow with the broadhead first then 15gr either way doesnt seem to matter much on heavier bows/arrows like 2219s and 65#......with 1916s and a 40# bow it makes a big difference.........with wood out of the heavy bow and 625gr shafts 160 snuffers and 190 VPAs both hit the same out to 20 yds for me.........I would just try them and see.......YMMV..........

Well I tried some 160gr field points and they seem to fly perfect also. How is this possible? According to Stus calculator they should be underspined now. It also seems like the bow is quieter now but that could be my imagination.

You can change field point weight quite a bit and see no difference with fletched arrows.That doesn't mean they will fly perfectly on a bare shaft or broadhead.The ultimate test is to get perfect flight with a given weight broadhead.

I bareshafted the 160gr field points and I was getting good results with it. The reason for all this was simply that I want to use 3 blade heads for spring turkey and hog and was limited with 145gr. I will be getting some 160gr heads to go with these 160gr field points and go from there.

Stu's program is good, but is just a guide when it comes to woodies.. The best way to find what work with Your Bow and the way/style You shoot is to get out and try them. Don't depend on a program to tell You what works the best just use it as a guide.

Computer programs are like Stats on paper... They look good, but ask any pro Football Player or any other sports person about stats... Doesn't mean a thing when the game starts..
