Riser with a palm swell
« on: January 01, 2012, 07:28:00 PM »
What bowyers still cut their risers by hand or CNC their riser with a palm swell?  I have been experimenting with different grips ( by using suede leather and bondo and have discovered that a moderate palm swell( similar to what one finds on hammer handles and some knives) really improves my consistency.

I am sure the next bow that I order will have to have a handle with a  palm swell.

Built up longbows and recurves til I found a couple  Dale Dye recurves. Still have Hummingbird Longbows built up but the Dyes fit from the factory. Roy
Maybe it is time to shoot what I have on the rack

Allen,

I do custom shaped grips all the time for my customers in just about any design you'd like. I've even had guys send me clay models that I've shaped exactly to the model.

Everyone has a little different angle they feel comfortable with. I'm a firm believer having that grip fit just right makes a huge difference in your shooting consistency.   Kirk

Allen, Dan Toelke builds his risers by hand from a tracing of your hand with a raised area for your thumb to locate to. Absolutely repeatable grip shot after shot.

Schafer, Robertson, and Dale Dye will all make their bows with a palm swell; at leastt they all did when I ordered mine.  My Tolke's grip is different from the classical palm swell but it is easy to get  a consistent grip.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

The pics of the Toelke bows that I have seen have a thumb rest like a Fedora but not a palm swell unless I am mistaken.  The hand tracing that many bowyers use seems to be more for the circumference made by the thumb and index finger grip, I am guessing.

Kirk has the right idea about a mold of the grip.

By the way, from what I have seen of modifications of household items made for people with hand arthritis by occupational therapists,  a "chubby grip" could be better for those who have arthritis in their bow hand.

Eaglewing bows all have a palmswell and deep thumb groove. I add on extra thumb rest on request. All bows are fit to a hand tracing. Its about the best you can do unless the buyer is actually at the shop to fit.

God bless you all and have a great new year , Steve

I discussed the additional "palm swell" question with Bob Morrison on the last mini 13 ILF riser I had him make me.  I was concerned as many times my hand would 'slide' to to left and forward [ I'm right handed]as I draw and apply weight...

He came up with the "Perfect Grip" after supplying a very good "trace" of my hand that absolutely works fantastic... Talk to your bowyer.  Even though they may use CNC's to great extent, they can also build you a truly custom grip.  :wavey:

In addition to the above, a Tall Tines has a very nice palm swell. Try to get a hold of a Stalker too, their grips seem to be molded to your hand.

Guess I should have asked for pics, since " A picture is worth a thousand words."  Can anyone provide pics of the palm swell?  A view from the belly side would be most desirable.

I used to shoot magnum revolvers. Learned quick that a good grip is required for shot-to-shot consistency.

I play hell getting a grip with enough palm swell and front to back dimension.

I have short fingers, toes, nose... but apparently a broad palm. Dang bow will rotate on me on release and cause pure havoc.

I like that point above about arthritis... not yet in the hand, (everywhere else) but low grips especially cause tendons in my bow hand/wrist to ache in a couple shots!

Bob built me a honkin big riser once on my Cheyenne... works well.  I struggle with every other bow I have or try to shoot!

Thanks guys.   The pic helps.  The mods I have made are much more pronounced, almost bulbous in shape.  A good while back, a bowyer made a grip that was already canted to about 45 degrees, I cannot remember the name.
