Effect of Heat on Bow Strings ?
«

It seems that I read (long ago) that when using a piece of leather to apply wax the heat build up could result in damage to the bow string . I know that your fingers will burn with intensity and pressure .
Any info appreciated ....
Cheers and Happy New Year from the West Coast of Canada...

I've been doing it that way for over 40 years and never had a problem. I just put wax on and give it a good rub for a few seconds. No problem.

I have been doing this for years too. The wax will protect the string and the heat not only helps the wax penetrate the string but also helps pre-stretch the string. I do this with every string I make.

I read that too, and I imagine there is a point at which the string fibers will begin to break down or melt. However, like the rest of you, I still rub the wax in with leather and haven't melted one yet. I just don't get carried away with the rubbing. When I can see that the wax has melted, I stop. I think you'd have to get the string pretty hot to hurt it.

I just do it with my fingers. Melts just fine and I know to stop when my fingers get hot. :0)
