Blood trailin #9
« on: January 15, 2012, 03:27:00 PM »
I love it when a plans comes together, got a stand set up on a little ridge that runs along a flooded low spot. Deer travel thru the "pond" alot but we have finally dropped down below freezing and the clearing has got some ice on it. I was hoping that the deer would skirt the pond and then come right by the stand. I was up in the tree grinnin when 7 deer came thru the timber, got to the frozen clearing and turned right too me on a trail thats 12 yards away   ;)   They came by and there were a few big ol does in the group and once the 1st one got on by I figured I was golden. One of the big ones looked up at me but not for long. One paused quatering away just alittle too long and allowed me to ease the Titan to full draw, zoom in on the spot and grin as I let it all happen in slow motion  ;)   I was shocked to see the glowing nock not go right thru the deer. It was a bit higher and back but should have got into the goodies. Deer staggered along for 50 yards and stood there too long and then just moved off slowly.I kept an eye on it with binos as the glowing nock moved thru the loblollys. 5 minutes later or so I thought I heard it fall but wasnt sure.I eased out without even going over to look. I got a Black mouth cur pup and was hunting not too far from my friend Bruce who I got the pup from. We arranged to bring my pup and one of his good trackers along just in case the pup didnt do right.
My day was made when the wife and daughter decided they wanted to go along too, both showing alot of intrest in this blood trailing dog stuff. We got there in the AM and I got the pup, Hunter, on the trail and while he showed greater intrest in the deer droppings his demenor changed when we found blood!! The trail wasnt long or much blood and the older dog smelled the body but dang if Hunter didnt lead my wife right to him!!!! Looked like the deer was dead when I climbed out of the tree, it was laying where I thought I heard it the night before. A possum or something chewed off the tail and ate at the glory hole a bit but no real meat damage at all. We let the dogs chew on it a bit and drug it out. Cool morning for sure.

One handsome fella....dogs good lookin too  :biglaugh:

Been a good season, never killed 10 in a season before and Ive got 2 more weeks......

Love those cur dogs! What else will you hunt with it? My cousin has one and it is an ace squirrel hunter, very patient and can catch them.

And congrats on #9!
