How to remove old grip glue
« on: January 16, 2012, 09:35:00 PM »
Just pulled leather grip from longbow and there is old dried glue and thin strips of leather on wood handle.

What is best method to remove without damaging wood finish on bow?  I am thinking there must be a safe cleaner that will remove this without harming bow.

Thanks for your  help

I'm curious as well, just got a used bow from the classifieds with some gunk on it, don't want to screw up the finish!

A product called Goo Gone. Available everywhere. Even wal mart. Works like a charm. Made from orange oil I believe? Great bow polish too but has a strong smell.

Never tried WD-40, I'll have too try next time that I need to remove some glue.

Whip and rainman, Do you clean up with Isopropyl alcohol, prior to re-gluing?

I have a product at work that is a citrus based adhesive remover, made by 3M. It works great, but WD-40 will disolve many different adhesives. It may take several applications but it works. Tape off the area you don't want to scratch and if the glue gives you trouble, try using a scotch brite pad to gently scrub it off.

Goof Off is even better than Goo Gone.
