New Mexico Winter Hunt
« on: January 18, 2012, 10:54:00 PM »
In the first week of January, three of us from California, headed to New Mexico in search of mule deer.  Our plan was to hunt for five days.  I've been in this area before, but never had a chance to hunt it.  Alan and myself were going to hunt.  Anthony was going to visit some friends in the area.  After we arrived there, we settled in and the next day we got our hunting license.  We were ready to hunt.  As we drove to our hunting area we saw a couple of bucks.  So things were looking good.  We hunted for a couple of days with no luck. On this trip Alan was using a Ventura Custom Bow made by Anthony.  Anthony is also a sponsor.  I used one of my Rainy Day Bows, that drew 49lbs @ 29 with a carbon arrow tipped with a Zwickey Delta that came in at 480 grains.  Last summer they had a fire and most of the vegetation was gone.  We ended up hunting from a ground blind.  On the third day Alan got a nice 4 X 4.  On the fourth day I was in my blind about one hour before sun rise.  Since Alan was done hunting he was about 300 yards from me and he saw a buck about 200 yards from him headed in my way.  He pulled out his camera and took some pictures.  five minutes later the buck came in and my hunt was over.  Someday I hope to hunt the area again.

Alan's buck.

were these OTC tags or were they draw tags? I ask because I went to NM a few years back on a rifle hunt and that was the last year for OTC rifle tags. I love the country I hunted in, what part of the state if you dont mind? (just general NSEW etc)Thanks and nice buck!

Both beautiful bucks!!  Congrats to both of you.

Motorhead.. our tags were over the counter for private land in the south-east part of the state. But we did see bucks in the next zone which is public and a draw zone.
