String for old longbow.
« on: January 23, 2012, 06:52:00 PM »
Help ! I need some information about a string
for an old longbow 50 @ 27 62 inch lefthanded.I think it is an older Chek-mate with tiny tips. The string that is on it is more like a rope than a bowstring.I sort of remember that a 12 or 14
strand B50 would be plenty. Am I correct?
The next ? is Endless loop or flemish ? If I
can get this thing working properly maybe I can
learn to shoot a  straight grip bow along with a recurve style grip. Thanks for any help you can give me.

14 strands of dacron is plenty and endless or flemish, your call both work just fine.  Whatever style you want.

Elf,

L82Hunt is spot-on and he just happens to make a great string.  Some folks prefer endless loop strings for longbows but you can certainly use either style.

Elf, if thats is the weight you draw, I would go with 12 strands!

But if it is capable of using a HP material, I would prefer it over dacron!

12 stands of B50 or B55 would work fine unless you like a thicker string for nock fit reasons.

Yes, 12 strands, dacron, elf. But if it was mine, and an old, no warranty, no worry bow, and a longbow, I would shoot a padded loop 10 strand, HP string. But that's ME!  :bigsmyl:

I'd probably go with 12, but 14 will work fine also.  Endless or flemish is a personal thing--I'd go with flemish since it's more adjustable, but either one should be very quiet on that style bow.  With a 26" draw you should be getting around 48# from that bow.
