Antlers hiding screws on a take down bow

Hi friends,

this is a pic of a Schafer Silvertip take down. To disassemble this bow I suppose that you have to remove the antlers which are on top of the two screws. Does anybody know how those antlers are fixed on top of the screws so that they can be removed and put back without to much trouble.

Reason for my question. I’m building a all wooden take down and would like to hide the screws the same way as shown on the Silvertip.

You should be able to unscrew using the antler burrs as knobs.,they are probably epoxied to the bolt head.

Turn -em lefty for loosey. They should be part of the limb bolt.

You can counter-bore a hole in the bottom side of the antler.  Then file a couple of small grooves on the outside of the bolt head. I have always used smooth-on to then epoxy the screw to the antler.  The grooves in the head are just a little more surface area for the epoxy to adhere to.  I put a piece of wax paper between the limb and bolt, screw it down pretty close and epoxy the antler in place with the limbs bolted so I can  get the antler just the way I want it.  Good luck.

I find the center of the show side of the antler.  I then transpose this center to the underside of the antler or the side that will not be seen.  I then drill a hole at this center mark just a hair larger than the hex head of the bolt and just deep enough to hide the head of the bolt.  I use a fostner bit for this.  I then drill a  small hole at the base of the hex bolt head while the bolt is on a vise.  The size drill for this hole is a regular drill just large enough to pass a small but stiff piece of galvanized wire through.     I then dirll the same size hole  through one side of the antler in line with the hole I just drilled on the base of the hex bolt head.  I go past to the other side of the antler but I do not go through it. I then affix a small piece of stiff galvanized wire so as to make the letter T with the bolt and the wire. The wire goes through the first hole drilled on the  side of the antler bolt, through the hole in the hex bolt and into the other side hole made on the antler.    I then fill the fostner hole made on the antler with 2 ton expoxy and make sure the bolt is perpendicular as it dries.  The wire guranttees that the bolt will never break loose from the antler as you turn the antler to screw and unscrew the anlter bolt.  I also fill in the small hole I made on the side of the antler with the 2 ton epoxy  The side hole will disapper after the epoxy dries.

Hi,

I’m surprised to read, that you screw down the bolt by just turning the burr with your fingers, without using a wrench? Does it really get as tight as that to fix the limb to the riser?

Yep, that's all there is to it.  Even on those with regular hex head bolts you should only tighten them to minimal pressure - Don't crank them tight!  Overtightening could damage the limb.
