Something new from Maddog!!!
« on: January 26, 2012, 01:15:00 PM »
Mike and I were talking a couple of months ago about short bows. He knows I am a small bow nut, so he sends me a prototype he had done years ago. I did a little shooting w/ it,even hunted a few times w/ it. We talked about different things that might work better. Here is the result.Mike calls it the "Machete".
This is a short bow designed for short draws, 26" max. Bow is 46" w/ a 6" brace height!! Bow shoots like a house afire!! Sinks arrows in my targets 4-5" deeper than other bows I have w/ the same draw weight.

Here it is, Black & white ebony limbs, Black limba and B&W ebony riser. Sheep horn tips and grip overlays.

Thats a beautiful bow! And knowing Mike I bet it's a shooter. Wish my draw length was shorter so I could shoot it though.

It's sort of "new", but I haven't really gotten serious about marketing the Machete Yet. (I call it that because it's brush bow, and a machete is the only thing I can think of that I'd take in the bushes with me besides a roll of toilet paper.)
Anyhow, I need to tweak the design a bit before I put in on my website and give it a price. Mike (Prairie Drifter) is sort of a field tester for me I guess.  I get challenged with making what others don't have from him and if I like the design then I'll put ti out there.

Mike, try to keep the long-armed guys who like short bows in mind too. We talked about that little 54" recurve that I picked up. You nailed it exactly - started stacking a little over 27" and was maxed out at 28". Hurt to sell that little bow. A 56" that I could draw 29.5 sure would be sweet.

That's an awesome bow! Love the woods, and if it could handle a 30" draw I'd love to have one  :)

Mike are you making bows with clear glass now? Last time I talked to ya, you advised me you would not be making any with clear glass due to the imperfections plaguing clear glass! Thanks Richard

Mike would it be possible to make a bow with the same kind of lines as this one but long enough to handle a 28" draw. I am loving the looks of this bow.

Not for this guy, but there're guys out there that do it, Like Lil' suckling, but that one there stops at 26".  I make a 54" recurve (49" nock to nock) that handles 28" of draw. But for now I'm done building forms.

And Yes, I will use clear glass,  just talk with me about it,  It costs more, but I will do it.  I prefer to use veneers and limb materials that make good limbs, and I don't like to spend the better part of a day looking for hard to get wood.  But Yes, I will use clear glass.  (but I still don't like it)

Nice looking short bow. Also, nice to show it in a photo with it fully strung.

I shot it a bunch, I draw 28.? but I was drawing it until it stopped and anchoring the base of my thumb to my chin.  I'm actually thinking about making one of these to hunt with next year.  It's fun to shoot and performs really well I surprised. One of these days I got to get a Chronograph, and then I guess I have to care enough about speed to try it out.
