Your Carbon Arrow Setup
« on: January 29, 2012, 09:52:00 PM »
hey there, ive shot wood arrows for years, and i am trying carbons for the 1st time.

i am using gt 3555s (.500) 28" with 225 gr. points with a 51# patriot recurve with fastflight string. they shoot pretty well, but while bare shafting they seem to still be stiff. the woodies i shoot are usually about 53-54#-28".

all of the arrow shaft charts say that they should be good... of course the adams spine tester shows them to be far too stiff.

just wondering what others may use with success

I agree on the to stiff part.

I am shooting Easton Epic 600 spine arrows.  Full length with 400 grains up front.   300 grain points, aluminum inserts and aluminum footings.   I draw 30 inches on a 55lb @ 30 inch RD longbow.   Throw a 250 or 300 grain point on the shafts and see what they do.

I have not found any of the charts to be accurate with trad arrows.   The center cut of the bow has a lot to do with arrow spine as well.

carbons are very different from other arrow shaft materials.  they have very different static and dynamic spines.  as such, you may find that you will need weaker spined arrows than you may have originally thought, or were advised.

in the final analysis, all that matters is that your arrows - field points and broadheads - fly well for you out of your bow(s).

nothing else matters.

how you arrive at well flying arrows doesn't much matter either.  all of the opinions of others, charts, programs, and what not are ancillary to your real world results.  i recommend trying out others arrows and/or get yourself a shaft test kit.

good luck.

WOW! it is strange how much different arrows fly between multiple archers using almost the same spec. of bow. My 3555's were 29" .145 up frt.
shot at my 28" draw out of a 52" Centaur and they
minnowed al the way to the target!! I switched to .400 spined 29.5 Trad Only carbons, with .175 up frt. and "BINGO". Absolute perfect flight.

I just footed a new batch of Beman MFX arrows today. I'll be shooting them out of my 49@29 Whip.  Arrows are cut to 30.5" and weight 545-550 gr.  the up front weight consists of a 125 gr head, 75 gr insert, and 20 gr of footing. There's also about 5 gr of footing on the nock end.

I can also shoot 600s out of this bow similarly set up, however they show a bit weak when bareshafting....i just happened to have a few laying around.

X2 on what Rod said every chart i have used gets me way stiff with carbons, that"s why i now use a little common sense and a bare shaft to tell me what my bow likes     :knothead:

I havent found the best yet. The 100grs. Sure do fly sweet. and the 150s. Oh i either shoot magnus snuffers or stingers. I have no idea why but the fly likes them.

If you think they're stiff, try adding a little  more weight to the front.  That would probably be cheaper than to buy new shafts.  My low 50# bows like 3555's, but I leave them a little bit longer around 29"-29.5".

I shoot 50# at my draw length and shoot 30.5" GT 55/75 with 250gr up front. The fly great out of two of my bows at that weight and shoot bullet holes through the paper.

I've been shootn cedars for a long time and resisted carbons until recently. Played around w weights FOC, heavy inserts, heavier heads,  and all that.
My personal perception, which is mostly seat of the pants, seems to be that once the heavy FOC arrows start falling, they fall hard. Of course I'm only shooting lighter weights these days, 42#.

Is it me or do others feel like a somewhat more balanced shaft seems to arc more evenly? Its kind of a zen thing ya know?

I shoot CX 150's 31.5" long with 50 grain inserts and 125 grain heads.

Bow is a recurve 57 @ 29"

I've been through a lot of arrows and experimenting to get there. I shot a lot of tournaments last year with arrows that were too stiff, and did alright, but man, well tuned arrows make a difference.

I shoot a Toelke Whip which draws 55 lbs at 28" I draw the bow to 31" and shoot full length GT7595's with 365 grains on the front end(100grain insert, 100 grain adapter, and 165 grain Simmons Tree Sharks). These bare shaft very well for me, I believe differences in release may have an effect on how arrows act for different people.
