for a three fletch, i prefer a big feather with maximum helical. modified shield shape, 5.25" long and a gradual slope from rear to front, for more surface area/steerage.

Rob, did you go big due to a heavy head weight?

nothing at all to do with the front end weight. more surface area = better straightening out and steerage.

Ended up with this parabolic shape. Tested until I found one that was very quiet.

I make this in every length from 5.5 maxi down to 3 inch for four fletch. As far as stearing for big heads these work fine with 190-250gr heads in the 4 inch three fletch out of my selfbows with no issues. And once down in the 4 inch range nice and quiet. 5.5 maxi can sound like helicopter coming in for landing.

Jack,
I've wondered about getting a melted build-up from the burners. How do you remove that?
Thanks,
~CB

Take a sharp knife and just scrape it across in the direction of the feather. It comes right off

A coarse grit sandpaper works great for removing the charred edge as well and if you do it after you taper the leading edge you can smooth that part a little more.

After a few shots the burn is gone.
Wannabe just posted my feather shape in his "pink" thread
http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=113411
I get a lot of surface area and a quiet shooting arrow.

What the others said it just comes right off. You can just run your fingers down the fletch.

These are high back parabolic 5.25". Touch taller than 3/4" high at the highest point in the back. Straighten out of longbow fast. I use a sanding-pad to remove the black char that is left.

#1.
Has the most surface area in the back...where it does the most good.
Looks like it will have enough shorter/stiffer support barbs for those taller barbs to keep somewhat quiet.
also...I think it looks the coolest...
#2 ...looks too much like a roughed out moon shape.
#3 I think it would be loud the way the longest barbs don't have much support.

I have little archery experience but for my high power model rockets that can go up a few miles the best wing shape is the clipped delta, I would think that shape would be the most beneficial for arrows too and out of your three options #1 appears to be the closest to it.

Here's one I came up with, kinda like one of the old Vario Clipper options("Orca" cut I think)...5" long and low profile.
Some will say they are noisy because of the trailing edge...but if they are noisier than any other cut I can't tell.
And the 5-6 deer and 4 hogs I've killed while using these arrows can't argue either
I just think they're kinda cool...

I like that cut, did you have to bend it a certain way to accomplish that circular cut, What did you use as a guide?
