Need help with tuning a Grizzly
« on: February 04, 2012, 10:57:00 PM »
Trying to tune my 45# 1971 Grizzly. My drawlength is right at 29", Shooting Easton Gamegetter 2016's at 31" with a 125gr head.  I can't get my nock high to go away regardless of nockpoint. My left to right seems to be dead on.  Any suggestions on what to try next?  shot pwobably 100 arrows today trying to fix this to no avail.  Nockpoint is set to about 3/8 nock high right now. When bareshaft tuning, my bareshafts always hit low no matter of nock height. I'm shooting at about 15 yds.Very frustrating. Braceheight is set to 8 1/2" with a new D55 string. Anybody have any suggestions? I can get what seems like good arrow flight up to 30 yds with fieldpoints, but barshaft says otherwise. It wouldn't bother me, but I'm sort of a perfectionist.

I have the same model and weight of bow and I think my brace is 7 1/2. And I believe I've been told that the nock point should be 1/2 inch above center.I think I got this bow checked out at Archery Learning Center in Snellville last year. Dave

Maybe try a different arrow or brace height. I have a shorter draw and use to shoot 2018's

I never have run into a 2017 arrow.
Are you using 2016 or a 2117?

prolly using 2117 killy , if so I would say way to stiff for that set up . I would go with 2016 and start over .

My Grizzly is 45# and likes a 7 1/2" brace. As far as alluminums go, I believe I used to shoot 2213's W/ 100 or 125 heads. Now I shoot 45=50 woods out of her. Shoots great!  Try A 3/8" nock hight.

I'm using 2016's, sorry didn't catch the misprint. I'll adjust the braceheight to 7 1/2 and see what happens.

Dave- GRIV (George) is the man, that's who I go to for my archery needs, good folks. I'm really wanting to figure this out on my own so I have yet to take it to him.

If 2117s use heavier tips and use a double nock point. I got nock high and went to double string nocks. Now it is not a problem.

I didn't see if you said it earlier, but do you shoot split or 3 under?  I have a newer grizzly  and noticed that my arrows were hitting the shelf at 3/8 high nocpoint.  Mine ended getting tuned at 3/4 high.  It was hitting rest and giving me false reading.  Check your tiller of your limbs to see what it says.

I'm also using a double nock point.  I'm shooting 3 under as well.

Are you sure that the nock point is high enough?  I originally thought that you needed a double nocking point...but then I saw where you have that.  The other suggestion would be to run the nocking points higher.  you could be hitting the shelf and causing the arrow to kick.  I shoot 3 under as well and most of my bows use about 1/2" above center nock point height...that being said, my newest recurve required a nock point of 9/16" above center.  It was giving me fits as well because I never thought that I would need to go that high...until I tried it.

Keep raising your noc point up about 1/16" at a time and see what happens. Is your lower noc point to high causing  it to pinch your arrow?

The highest I have gone is 5/8 above center.  It just looks weird to me. I guess I'll try to go higher. I looked at it and it just looked abnormal for the nocking point to be that high.  Fairly new to traditional and its a little diff than compounds as far as nock point. Thanks for the help everyone, hopefully I can get it figured out.  I try to leave a small gap in nock point so I don't get pinch, how much gap is too much?

About 1/32 to 1/16. I just read where your brace height is set. It sounds a little high. I think bear suggest 7 1/4 to 8 1/4 for grizzly. Your bow will tell you what it likes got the bh to be set at. Mine is at 8 1/8. You start at the lowest you can then shoot several arrows out of it. Then add 4 twist in it then shoot it again. You will notice you have less noise, hand shock and shoots better. Keep doing this prcess until you find it. When you notice it frying louder again  in twist it a twist or two  until you find the sweet spot. I can notice when mines off by a 1/16 seams it doesn't shoot as well. You need to set your brace height before you set your noc.

Couple of things you might look at on your Griz. I have one of that era also. First, on mine if I measure the fistmil from the deepest part of the grip at 7 3/4" there is too much string laying on the limbs. So I kept raising the brace height until the string was only touching to just above where the string grooves ended and the bow shot really good. I thought that is a way high brace height until I measured from from the riser from where the arrow shelf is and lo and behold it was 7 5/8". I know some bows are measured from the deepest part of the grip and others from the face of the riser for a reference point???? Your choice once you get it working right. You cannot have a bunch of string laying on the bow at the ends though cause nothing will work right.
Other thing is, my bow is marked 45# @ 28" on the limb and also under the shelf plate but it actually scales out to be 49# at 28". That makes no diff to me on arrow choice as 50# spine woods are good either way. 2016's w/125 gr. pts. do well also. 2018's w/145 gr. pts. do well too. Good luck.
I thought that old bow sucked till I figured out I was trying to shoot it with a way low brace height. Love it now but being 67 yr.s old I wish it truly was 45# sometimes. On that short of a bow those 4# develop quickly.
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

so, do I measure the braceheight from the edge of shelf?  I thought braceheight was measured from the deepest part of the grip.  I lowered it to 7 1/2" from the deepest part of grip, but made no difference.  Sorry guys/gals, I'm probably making this a lot more difficult than it really is. Thanks for all of the help.

Your right about being measured from the deepest part of the grip. Your sweet spot in brace height will be somewhere between 7 1/4 and 8 1/4. Every bow will not have the same brace height as others due to every bow is different even if it is the model, weight, length, string, etc. Also everyone shoots the bow differently that means what ones brace height to one might not be the same as another's.
